HIGH PRICES FOR SELLING PLATERS Instances have bech numerous this year of selling plate winners being either sold or bought in for sums exceeding ,000, and I believe a record was set up when Olympus, following his success in the Ditton Selling Plato at Sandown xn July 16 last, was sold to Mr. II. Fletcher for ,500. At Kempton, however, even this large sum was easily eclipsed when Mr. Gulstaun paid 250 in order to retain Corporal after lie had secured the Vaux-hall Plate. Altogether 1,000 has been invested by Mr. Galstaun over this two-year-old son of Stornoway, for he obtained possession of the gelding at Gatwick in Juno for ,000 and gave ,750 to retain him after his next victory in a Jseller" at Alexandra Park in July. At the latter venue the entered selling iirice was ,500, but in the other two instances only 00, so that Mr. W. Dixcn, the owner of the second to Corporal last Wednesday, participated in a handsome surplus. Prior to the sale of Olympus alluded to above, the record was held by Miss Preston, which, after winning at Epsom 011 May 20, 1891, was bought in by her owner, Mr. Deacon, for ,350. She was, however, entered to be sold for ,000; while Little Saint, purchased by Mr. Richard Croker for ;000 after securing the Surrey Plate at Sandown Park on July 10, 1898, was entered to be sold fcr 50.
