HOW NOTED ADMIRAL ROUS DECIDED A case was referred to Admiral Rous, the English turf oracle of long ago. arising out of a dispute over a commission alleged to have been executed for a certain noble lord whose reputation was not exactly spotless. The commissioner produced his books, showing that the bets had been made, but could not show any written instructions from his principal. Still he succeeded in satisfying the admirul, who, turning to the lordling, said, "My lord, you must pay." "But, why," objected the other. "It is only his word against mine." "Exactly," replied Admiral Rous. "I believe him and not you."
