LATEST NEW ORLEANS RACING GOSSIP Xentuckians Holding Their Own Thus Far Jockey "Ponce Biding "Well. NEW ORLEANS. La., December 5. Tlie coming weeks racing at Jefferson Park is looked forward to with keen anticipation on the part of local racegoers. More of the" better grade of horses are reported to be in condition to race and witii their entry into the sport the quality of the racing is exjiected to be much improved. Tokay, a bay gelding by Marchmont Tokalon. now in bis eleventh year, has been put back In training -after a long lay-off. He is now the nroimrty of Dr. TallKitt, well known race track veternarian. and is boinjj trained by E. C. Crockett. In his younger days Tokay was a fairly useful race horse on the Kentucky circuit, winning many races for J. W. Fuller, his Texas owner. To date the Kentuckians have held their own in the matter of races won with their rivals from other sections and they expect to do even better when they get to the Fair Grounds and their new two-year-olds get into action. The horsemen from the Blue Grass State have a hard time 6f it in the stakes in their own section, as the easterners sel- dom miss taking them, but they do better in the ordinary races here. The Kentucky representation is not as strong this season as in previous years, but it is much better. A. W. Jackson, who acquired Simpleton at private sale from O. Rogers before leaving Kentucky, brought that three-year-old here and he, with consistent Pirate McGee, comprises his winter racing stable. Simpleton has done little since leaving here last spring, but he is training well now and should be heard from pretty soon. He is a usefunl mud horse when in his best form. Pirate McGee is a steady selling plater that does not pick either his track or his company as long as he is in his class, and he is ready for his best showing now. The surprise of the season in a riding way has l been the sensational saddle work of jockey C. Ponce. I Tliis little fellow spent the greater part of last j winter here on crutches as the result of an accident I at the Fair Grounds, but he lost none of his gnme-ncss and he is going great now. He was the first jockey here to ride three winners In one day and he duplicated the feat a few days later. His apprentice allowance expired several days ago.
