MUCH NEEDED REST FOR UNDER FIRE PAT DUNNES COURAGEOUS SON OF SWYNFORD NOT TO RACE DURING THE WINTER SUCCESS IN THE STUD AWAITS HIM By EXILE Under Fire will not race during the winter, lie will be given a long and much needed rest in Kentucky instead of enduring the rigors of a winter campaign at New Orleans. Always last summer at Saratoga, when looking over the son of Swynford in the paddock, the hymnal words of "weary and worn and sad" were ever ringing in my ears, but Under Fire, after his return to Kentucky in the fall, improved amazingly in his bodily condition and appearance and looked more like the same Under Fire which ran third to Sir Bartou for the Kentucky Derby, and by his performances a little later gave conclusive proof of being possessed of both speed and endurance, and that he is a game one none in his common sense can deny. In fact, Under Fin; is a regular Coeur dLion, for had this not been the case he never would have withstood any such trying -ordeal as lias been his ever since lie stepped off the cars, a sick horse, on his arrival Last spring in Lexington. To cap the climax of his misfortunes. Under Fire, before the summer was well advanced, turned bleeder, and last spring made a short season in the stud. However, like the gamp horse he is, he emerges triumphant from his various undertakings as can only an out-and-out thoroughbred horse. Perhaps he will be permanently retired to the stud, where success, too, without the remotest doubt, awaits him; Swynford, his sire, waslrreat top sawyer as a race horse, an improving sort, winning the St. Leger from Bronzino and the Derby horse Lemberg, and was always the master of the latter in their fcfur-year-old days. Only recently, when in conversation with Messrs. Welsh and Joyner, it was remarked that Swynford, as a race horse, was one of the best, and what is more, he is coming on right well as a sire, as was to be expected of a son of John oGaunt and tlie Oaks winner Canterbury Pilgrim, by Tristan, and it is through him that the Isonomy line best carries on, better by all counts than by way of Gal-linule, whose main strength lies in the excellence of his daughters as brood mares. Under Fires dam, Startling, is a daughter of Laveno, son of Bend Or and Napoli, by Macaroni, from Star- Shoots dam Astrology, by Hermit,, and Star Shoot, remember, headed the winning sire list in this country for no less than five years. TJiider Fire and the dead Hamburg Place premier are closely related, practically brothers in. Jblood.jecep yet,iRelle;MrfDunne has made no definite plansTottefutnre of his good horse, but it is the expressed wish of all and sundry that he be located somewhere in this neighborhood, for. if I must say it, Kentucky is just at the present decidedly short on really capable sires, and as Under Fire is a member of the Maid of Masham family. .of the Derby sire Cyllene, St. Hilaire, St. Damien, Omar Khayyam, Sysonby, Sir Martin, Sir Barton, Winklields Pride and many others, his coming would be in every way desirable. - T , , Isonomy 19 J Sterling 12 E 3 J bay Jlsola Bella 19 E bay, 1890 Deaulock J Wenlock 4 E "Isinglass I Malpractice 3 E I St. Simon 11 J Galopin 3 E .
