VETO IS IN WINNING FORM i Takes the Jefferson Park Feature Ably Ridden by Lyke. i American Maid No Longer a Maiden Talisman Wins Another Race. BY J. L. DEMPSEY. NEW ORLEANS, La.. December 22. A. S. Wood-cliffes Veto, making his racing debut here, scored impressively in the .,000 mile and a sixteentli handicap serving as the feature and won easily under a good ride by Lyke from Master Bill, with The Wit in third place. The latter just managed to overhaul Fizer. with Honolulu Boy a distant follower. Veto showed fine speed, but at one period appeared a loser when Fizer took the lead, but in the stretch he came fast under Lykes energetic riding and raced into the lead again and, in the filial drive, held Master Bill safe. A terrific storm in the night again put the track in bad order, but a high wind today caused it to dry out considerably during the afternoon and firm footing was obtainable, but most of the riders elected to guide their mounts somewhat wide and it seemed productive of good results, for most of those scoring successes finished on the outer part of the course. Talisman, carrying the A. L. Rirby colors, again figured in a winning performance and won from Hidden Jewel, the favorite, hi the fourth race. Her ! owner requested her to be excused from starting, but when informed that he would have to pay a scratch fee declared his intention of starting her. The third race was followed by much adverse comment, directed mostly against Met! raw, rider of Trust Official. He opened a big favorite, but gradually receded in the betting, while the support for Trantula was steady. The latter won easily, but Trust Official indicated superiority, as McGraw kept him in the deepest part of the course during the early racing, and when ridden hard he came with a rush, j American Maid scored tin easy victory in the opening dash over a big band of maidens, which included Secretary anil Sea Board, but American Maids- suddenly improved form resulted in the withdrawal of L. Williams license. In a previous race American Maids betting odds soared with apparently no support for her and jockey McAtee at the time was cautioned by the stewards to do his best on her. McAtee had the mount, on her again today and Williams explanation to the stew-aids with regard to her inconsistent running was 1 , not satisfactory. The best finish of the afternoon came in the final race, won by Nebraska, after a hard stretch duel with N. K. Ileal, with the margin of a nose separating the pair. Phalaris at a long price furnished an upset in the sixth race, which lie won with ridiculous ease from Waukeag. .Miller Hendersons Anna Gallup again scored in easy style when she accounted for the second race in a big field of starters. , 1 The stewards, in an investigation of Uagazzas inconsistent recent races, had jockey Ponce and owner Peterson before them and were satisfied with the testimony of both owner and jockey. Jockey Woodstock was suspended for six days by the starter for disobedience at the post. "Bud" Fisher departed today for the East to spend the holidays at home. Ho will return here next month. 1
