R A SMITH HORSES AT BOWIE Slippery Elm and Irish Kiss in Good Condition After Winters Rest BALTIMORE Md March 10 Robert A Smith has come up from New Orleans with his platers Benevolent Jean Bullant Ragnarok Ultra Gold and a couple of promising twoyearolds all of which are ready for the first racing of the eastern season of 1021 that will begin at Prince George Park Bowie on April 2 He will take up immedi ¬ ately his veteran stars Slippery Elm and Irish Kiss which put in the winter at the Smith farm near Newark Delaware the first winter of rest they have known in three or four years and they are fresh and good in consequence They Iiavp had plenty of galloping these five or six weeks how ¬ ever and they are not as far from racing as might be supposed Possibly they will not be ready to put their best feet forward right off at Bowie but they should be winning purses toward the end of the two weeks meeting of the Southern Mary ¬ land Agricultural Association and be at their best at Havre de Grace and Pimlico PimlicoThese These horses will race with the best of the handi ¬ cap division this year They have improved from the plater class under the handling of Smith and it takes a good horse to beat elther one of them They accounted for the hotter part of the 02000 won by the Sunnyland Stable last year Irish Kiss which won 24197 was victorious in the 5000 Detroit City Handicap the Independence Handicap at Devonshire Park the National at AVindsor the 10000 Toronto Spring Cup at AVoodbiue and other races Slippery Elm the winner of 18801 beat The Porter and Exterminator In the 10000 Fron ¬ tier Handicap at Windsor after trimming Boniface in the Belvidcre at Pimlico The game little Ban noikhurn horse did not stand up so well through the summer of 1920 because he had had u hard grilling at New Orleans the preceding winter winterGood Good riders are hard to get tliese days Smith has a very capable jockey in Louis Morris
