TRAINING SEASON BEGINS Kentucky Derby Eligibles Work at Churchill Downs Latest Turf Gossip LOUISVILLE KV March IS C C Van Meter pried the lid off of the training season in earnest hen today for Kentucky Derby eligible when he sent Coyne and Brother Batch seveneighths of a mile in 130 at Churchill Downs They were hard held and worked practically on even terms They ran the first threeeighths in HO and three quarlers in 115 They only cantered out the last eighth eighthBoth Both courses were fast this morning and brisk moves were in order Following Jie exercising period at the Downs a survey was made of the track and a grader was run over it to eliminate the few rough spots Irft by the recent heavy rains rainsArrivals Arrivals of jockeys were numerous L Mink and C Hunt came in from Mobile J Roberts from his home in Texas W Hong from Tijuana and W Heinisch and J Groth from Xew Orleans OrleansJesse Jesse Spencer who is associated with Al Kirby in his racing enterprise came from Lexington to look over his horses at Douglas Park ParkPat Pat Galliger custodian of the jockeys quarters on the Kentucky circuit and who served in a similar capacity at Shreveport and Mobile arrived from the latter city this morning morningCharles Charles Hughes who has a division of the E F SimmsI W McClelland stable consisting of two yearolds at Saratoga wrote today requesting adr vice as to track and weather conditions here stat ¬ ing that it is his desire to ship here immediately immediatelySeveral Several carloads of horses left Mobile for this city last night and will be quartered at Douglas Park ParkJockey Jockey J Francis has been engaged to do the stable riding for Williams Brothers on the Ken ¬ tucky circuit and will report to K I Williams at Douglas Park at the conclusion of the Havana meeting
