VeteranAnother Another great crowd was in attendance and had hadhe he pleasure of seeing a splendid program of in ¬ teresting and wellcontested racing SAN DIEGO Cal April IB The hurdlers were the attraction today at Tijuana and despite the fact that the conditions read for maidens a stirring contest resulted First honors went to Hickorynut Having failed dismally on the flat she showed an abundance of speed over the hazards and won the race in a canter after being hard pressed by Jake Schas in the early running Hickorynut was admir ¬ ably ridden by jcckey Nelson who took her over the jumps in faultless fashion and calling on her before reaching the fifth jump the old mare forged to the front to win by four lengths Appletto fin ¬ ished in second place a length and a half in front of Jake Schas The first disqualification of the meeting came inthis race in which Appletto which finished second was placed last The offense for which Appletto was penalized was the crowding of JaUe Schas in the stretch while the latter was closing up The judge promptly placed Appletto last giving Jake Schas second place and Certain Point third thirdThe The opening race at five and a half furlongs brought together a cheap band of sprinters in which Alajah ruled the favorite He showed much speed in pacemaking but the finish saw Woodrose show ¬ ing him the way home John Lake was best of the others othersJOCKEY JOCKEY JOSIAH REPRIMANDED In the mile and a sixteenth dash the second race on the card Mike Duly ridden by the diminutive jockey Josiah won u hardfought struggle for vic ¬ tory over Electric which in turn bested Mayworth tlie favorite by a nose for second place After the race young Josiah was sharply reprimanded by the judges for pulling over in front of the others when entering the stretch before racing into a clear lead His tactics caused Lady Innocence some interference interferenceApple Apple Jack was a wild horse in the third race at five and a half furlongs and sprinting to the front with rapid strides he took a long lead soon after the start and won in a canter from Colonel Matt and Billy Joe The consistent Harrigans Heir scored another victory in the fifth race at five and a half fur ¬ longs but his success was accomplished after the hardest kind of a drive in which he won his race by a short head witli English Lady in second place while Katherine Bankin finished a bangup third The winner was a lukewarm favorite and was lucky to win Had jockey Bowe on English Lady made his move sooner the marc would probably have won as she was catching the winner with every stride strideAnother Another head finish was the result of the sixth race at four and n half furlongs in which Kthei Brown Shifty and Corncutter finished in close order The winuer was undeniably the best as she was shuffled rearward soon after the start How ¬ ever she made up ground on the outside and finishing gamely showed her head in front when passing the judges stand Shifty outstayed Corn cutter for second place placeYermak Yermak Miss Stathem and Walk Up provided i great finish in the mile and a sixteenth race in which the former won by a nose with the second and third horses crowding him Yermak moved up with a rush and forged to the front after en ¬ tering the stretch but Miss Stathem responding to a call finished resolutely and was wearing the leader down with every stride However he lasted long enough to win by inches Walk Up the f4 vorite and heavily supported by his stable con ¬ nections ran a good race but finished in third place placeSmiling Smiling Maggie the wellbacked public choice in the concluding race at five and a half furlongs made every post a winning one and won as if easily the best Tempy Duncan was her closest rival two lengths away while Hoover hard ridden took third place by a neck neckThe The two apprentice jockeys Josiah and Noble divided winnersIt honours today each riding two winners It is reported that Be Frank will be fired and turned put ut Imperial Beach next summer to rest for the next winter meeting at Tijuana Bungeorge TijuanaBungeorge which was brought here by Kddle Kauffman is another horse
