KOREA DIFFICULT TO TRAIN Dam of Botafogo Had Poor Suc ¬ cess as a Racer Botafogo Now at Chapadmalal ChapadmalalStud Stud Was the Greatest Race RaceHorse Horse Bred in Argentina It is not generally known that Thomas P Hayes the man who won the Kentucky Derby with Done rail a horse he bred owned and trained him ¬ self and who now is training some of Harry Payne Whitneys horses at the Lexington track has the distinction of having trained and raced Korea the dam of Botafogo the best race horse ever produced in the Argentine Republic or Argentina as some persons saj The writer of this probably would not have known it either had he not tho other day run across a casual mention of the fact in something he was reading readingMr Mr Hayes was subsequently asked about the mare that has given South America its most noted racer Why as I remember that little mare she had a habit of switching iier tail and was difficult to train said he Racing certainly was not her long suit I kept hammering at her and I think I won about four races and something like 1300 with her as a twoyearold but got nothing from her as a threeyearold I had her out at St Louis and down at Nashville Reference to the racing guides proved the accuracy of Mr Hayes recollection and lie continued Mr H P Head ley father of Mr Hal Price Headley bought Korea from an importer and in due time she came to me to race Even though her turf career was not brilliant Mr Headley might have kept her in the stud at Beaumont had not the pressure upon breeders because of the crusade against racing been such as to force them to dispersals of all or a part of their holdings in other countries So it came about that Mr Headley sold the mare to Major Thomas J Carson and he sent her to South America along with others from the Dixiana Farm establishment I am frank to say that I had no idea then that Korea ever would achieve a high place iu the brood mare ranks ranksSince Since this conversation with Mr Hayes the Bloodstock Breeders Review lias published the information that the mighty Hotafogo regarded as the best horse that has been bred in Argentina is at the Chapadmalal Stud the proprietors of which are Messrs Miguel A Martinez de Hoz and IS Villaneuvo and that the first of his offspring will come under the hammer1 in 1022 and if all goes well they are sure to fetch sensational prices pricesBy By Old Man Korea Botafogo was only once de ¬ feated and that by Grey Fox a son of Le Samari tain the French stallion which died in Argentina last August A subsequent race proved that the victory of Grey Fox was a fluke Korea was by Raeburn Ulla a daughter of Barcaldine and she came to this country at the foot of her dam damThe The late Mr E J Keylock who has been suc ¬ ceeded to ownership of the Broome Manor Stud at Swindon Wiltshire by his son Major II E Key ¬ lock was the owner of Ulla the granddam of Botafogo as well as Merry Token the granddam of Man o War It is related that Merry Token was sold to Sir II Eugene Leigh the American trainer now in Franco who at that time had stables near Swindon and that lie passed her on to Slajor August Belmont who brought her to his Nursery Stud and from here sent over to England two of her produce Merry Task and Sandmole the latter a brother to Mahubah dam of Man o War and won races with them Sandmole passed to Slajor Bell of Epsom from whom he was purchased last fall by Sir John Sanford and he now is back in this country at the Hurricana Stud Amsterdam N Y
