PREAKNESS STAKES ENTRIES One Hundred and Six Horses in Pimlicos 40000 Race Nominations Include All the Crack ThreeYearOlds En ¬ tered in Kentucky Derby The Preakness Stakes the most valuable three yearold stake to be run in the East has attracted an entry list of 100 horses representing fortysix owners from all parts of America and Canada CanadaThe The generosity of the Maryland Jockey Club in raising the added value of the Preakncss to 40000 has its reward in the nomination of practically every threeyearold colt and filly of merit now in training trainingThe The race should prove to be one of the greatest ever run In Maryland and a record number of starters will probably line up at the barrier barrierPrior Prior to 1917 the Preakness was a race of minor value and importance In that year the Maryland Jockey Club took a new departure and from being a most1 conservative organization developed Into a liberal and enterprising body bodyIts Its first step was to add 5000 to the Prcakness Stakes The result was a field of fourteen starters and a capital raqe which was won by E R Bradleys Kalitan KalitanEncouraged Encouraged by the success of its venture in 1017 the Maryland Jockey Club in 1918 took the bold step of raising the added value of the Prcakness Stakes to 15000 with no entrance fee but a starting fee of 2uO which went to the winner winnerTlio Tlio result was one of the romances of racing When the day of decision arrived it was found necessary owing to the numerous entries to run the race In two divisions This was done the club adding 15000 to each event so that really instead of one race for the Preakness in 1918 there were two which were won respectively by War Cloud and Jack Hare Jr JrIn In 1919 the Maryland Jockey Club again in ¬ creased the added value of the stakes to 23000 tlip same amount being added In 1920 when the famous Man o War added the stakes to his many other victories victoriesTJie TJie Preakness was inaugurated in 1909 as a mile race and was also run at a mile in 1910 In 1911 the distance was increased to one and one eighth miles and the race was won by Water vale which established a record of 151 which has not since l een equaled
