OPENING DAY AT P1ML1CO Maryland Jockey Clubs Spring Meeting Begins Today Inaugural Steeplechase the Mer ¬ chants Handicap and Wicomico Purse Initial Attractions BALTIMORE Md May 2 The Maryland Jockey Club vlir throw open the gates of the historic Pim lico course tomorrow for its 1921 spring meeting There will be twelve days of racing and 188650 will be distributed in stakes and purses The out ¬ standing feature of the meeting is the Preakness Stakes of 40000 the most valuable of threeyear old races to be decided in the East this year It will be run on the final day Monday May 16 Other attractions are the Pimlico Nursery of 2500 to be run May 4 the Pimlico Spring Handicap of 5000 added on May 7 Sprinc Juvenile of 2500 added on May 10 Green Spring Valley Steeple ¬ chase of 5000 added on May 14 and a host of overnight handicaps and purse races Purse values will range from 1300 to 2500 2500Everything Everything is spick and span for the opening and old Pimlico never looked more beautiful than it does now All the boxes have been reserved for tomorrow and society will be out in full force An inviting program has been arranged and some ex ¬ cellent racing is certain to be witnessed by a crowd that will tax the capacity of the plant plantBesides Besides the Inaugural Steeplechase additional attractions are the Merchants Handicap the Wi eomicu Puree ana n twoyearold Tactr the condi ¬ tions of which call for horses the property of residents Pennsylvania Maryland Virginia and the District of Columbia ColumbiaE E B McLean Stable which is starting in the year at this meeting is well represented especially in the twoyearold races racesTrack Track conditions promise to be fast provided of course no more rain falls The going was a bit sticky this afternoon but was drying out fast fastThere There are a particularly large number of steeplechase horses here and jumping races should bring out large fields All of the boxes havj been reserved many of them by the hunting and crosscountry set and the meeting will as in for ¬ mer years be one of the big social events in Maryland MarylandF F Ambrose Clark whose string this year is comprised of ten steeplechase and six flat horses will at the conclusion of the meeting be shipped to Woodbine Park and at the conclusion of that meeting they will be sent on to the Blue Bonnets course at Montreal MontrealJockey Jockey Johnny McTaggart has been engaged to do the riding for the Tliorncliffe stable this yeai and he will report at Toronto some time ncxi week weekAfter After Star Voters good showing in the Philadel ¬ phia Handicap at Havre de Grace on Saturday his owners determined to ship the colt to Kentucky to fill his engagement in the Derby He left for Churchill Downs last night in charge of L Tauber If has not yet been determined who will have the mount on the Ross racer but the best rider avail ¬ able will be engaged engagedW W P Bnrch is here with a dozen horses the property of Samuel Ross of Washington His string which numbers twentythree were wintered at Benning Mr Burch will ship what horses he is racing here back to Benning at the conclusion of the meeting and the entire band will then be set to Saratoga to await the opening of the racing at that point Mr Burch has several good two yearolds in his string among them the Sea King colt for which Mr Ross paid 13000 as a yearling
