NEGLECTED REGRESO WINNER Scores at Long Odds in Tijuana Sunday Fea ¬ ture Heat Race Great Contest SAN DIEGO Cal May 2 Before a large Sun ¬ day crowd of racing enthusiasts which numbered fully 5000 Regrcso running in the colors of C B Irwin accounted for the mile and a quarter handicap which was the outstanding feature of the day Overlooked by the public Rcgreso paraded to the post almost friendless In consequence he paid the good dividend of 3240 in the mutuels which was indeed a long price against this good longdistance campaigner to pay Regreso was able to keep up with the leaders and upon rounding the last turn he forged to the front and eventually won by two lengths Louis was his closest rival with Ike Harvey third The favorite Coffiehl intrusted to the novice jockey C Miller was in ¬ judiciously ridden being choked in front when he could have been running freely The result was that when Coffiehl was finally given his head he had nothing left and tired palpably palpablyThe The mile heat race proved a great contest with the spectators all wrought up to a high pitch of excitement during tho running of this feature In the first heat Sea Beach essayed to make a run ¬ away race out of it and led by a wide margin to the last turn where Pierrot ranged up alongside of him and easily vanquished him at the end Sea Beach finished in second place while Billy Joe took third money Upon returning to welsh out it was discovered that Pierrot and Billy Joe had both fallen lame and inasmuch as the latter was in a bad way lie was excused from starting in the next heat heatIn In the second run Medford Boy and Mike Daly provided a struggle the like of which has not been seen in many a day These two good stayers fought it out in a terrific duel through the final eighth with Medford Boy lasting long enough to win by the shortest of noses El Rey took second place besting Pierrot by a head headIn In the runoff Medford Boy was a topheavy choice inasmuch as Pierrot was quite lame How ¬ ever this ailment is chronic with the old fellow and again he was sent after the spoils The start favored Medford Boy which beat his rival away from the post the best part of a length This advantageous beginning enabled Medford Boy to take a quick lead and although Pierrot challenged him repeatedly during the running Medford Boy stayed in front and won by two lengths Despite the fact that Medford Boy won the race the olym ¬ pian laurels should be pinned on the brow of the stouthearted Pierrot Horsemen who have grown old in the sport of racing said that they could not remember witnessing as game a race as this lame thoroughbred ran He was cheered to the echo as he returned to the stand and his owner affectionately placed his arms about the horses neck as he stood being unsaddled unsaddledThe The speedy threeyearold Cahalan kept up his winning streak when he led a fast band of sprint ¬ ers home in the fourth race at five and a half furlongs Giving away much weight to his older opponents Cahalan was kept at the post a matter of nine minutes owing to the unruly tactics of the Weant entry De Land and Ten Can When they finally got away the ungainly winner stumbled badly but quickly recovered and by the time the stretch was reached he was in front by two and a half lengths This lead he held until he reached the sixteenth post where he suddenly tired and it took the hardest kind of riding on the part of jockey Denny to enable him to win by a neck from De Land and Valley Park Maid MaidPresident President James W Coffroth of the Tijuana Jockey Club announced today that the meeting here would positively close on next Sunday May 8 despite rumors to the effect that the present meet ¬ ing woiild be extended Coffroth also announced that there would be no racing on next Wednesday and Thursday but that the sport woiild be resumed on Friday and that an effort would be made to wind up the meeting in a blaze of glory Anent the closing Coffroth said We promised 125 days of racing and now we are going to give x ne additional day We hope to make the closing most attractive in our efforts to gain recognition for Tijuana as the cap ¬ ital winter racing in America
