MACOMBER YEARLINGS FROM FRANCE NEW YORK N Y May 10 The shipment of thoroughbred yearling from Fiance the latter part of this inonth by A K Macomber who arrived in New York from France Saturday is of the greatest importance to the future of the blood stock industry of the country It means an influx of strains which have shown their potent qualities in the stud of the late W K Vanderbilt The fact that Mr Vanderbilt was able for a number of years to head the list of winning owners in France or at least to be among the leaders is the best testi ¬ monial of the merits of the blocd to be found at the De Quesnay Stud The American mares taken abroad by Mr Vanderbilt were the best that could be secured here He pursued the same policy in the matter of his English and French mare which were mated with the best of his own stallions except in instances where he thought that better results would be had by patronizing an outside sire which he never hesitated to do As a result he developed a powerful racing and breeding establish ¬ ment which was at its best when he died last year yearWhen When Mr Macomber whose racing interests were already large took over the Vanderbilt establish ¬ ment he found that he had too many horses to race in France and he detrmined to send a string to the United States This was later modified somewhat and the present plan is to offer for sale about forty head chiefly yearlings from the Van ¬ derbilt stud at Saratoga early in August None of the yearlings has been tried but taking the records of the brothers and sisters and other close relatives into consideration there should be many winners in the group Even if the fillies in the consignment never see the post but are put to breeding they ought to be treasured for the benefit they will be to the breeding industry France lias sent us some great horses in recent years Sun Briar was born there and so was the fast mare Enfilade white the peerless Hourless first saw the light in that country
