WHITNEY DAY AT AQUEDUCT Famous Blue and Brown Colors in Glorious Triumph Broomster First in Great Ameri ¬ can John P Grier Wins the Queens County Handicap NEW YORK N Y June 25 Three horses of Harry Payne Whitney premier American sports ¬ man and breeder must have given him a proud half hour at the Aqueduct race course Saturday after ¬ noon Within thirtytwo minutes Broomster Olympus and John P Grier all Whitneybred and owned and all trained by that master of American trainers James Rowe showed supreme quality in two old American turf fixtures the Great American Stakes and the Queens County Handicap All three were the best in the group in which they ran and all were soundly supported by stable and public It was a fine afternoon for the respected blue and brown brownJohn John P Grier considered for some time as the best of the Whitney threeyearolds of 1920 a Man o War season was in the Queens County Handicap worth iir 50 to the winner and at a mile Against him was the bronze sprinter Gladiator Audacious Yellow Hand Blazes and Captain Alcock The Captain with 109 pounds was added while Seunings Park Knpbbie and Thunderclap the Rancocas pair were withdrawn withdrawnAs As an exhibition of supreme thoroughbred speed the Queens County was noteworthy As a race it wasnt John P Grier stoutly supported by stable and public was off smoothly took the track for his own at once and ran the mile in 136 easily ana witluUes8 Tthan tlie speed of closings pressure Of course it was a new track record displacing the Short Grass mile of 130 of 1910 made under 114 pounds poundsJohn John P Grier carried 127 pounds for his mile Compared with the other miles faster than yester ¬ days the fractional bits as made in them are of interest Here they are areHorse Horse 1st 4 2d Vi 3d Vi 4th his own running and won by two lengths hand ridden only and far loss than all out In the race it was shown that Gladiator driven into contention by Schiittinger an eighth out in the nice is best at shorter distances Gladiator could never get nearer than his own length to the Whitney horse His drive lasted less than five rlghths Then he was done and was eased to fin ¬ ish a dozen lengths behind the winner and in lust place The big br niz horse is u mere sprinter aninug the best horses of these days At the shorter distances he is probably supreme and would have given John P Grier a stout argument at threequartern of a mile had the Queens County distance ended there With Gladiator done and imt of the way Audacious took up a weak racing argument with the flying leader and landed in sec ¬ ond place two lengths away fully extended and two lengths more before Yellow Hand which cam on stoutly near the end Blazes and Captain Al ¬ cock never got into the racing picture pictureTim Tim Great American Stakes worth 7iOO and at fiveeighths from the chute was for the best of the twoyearolds and brought out thirteen of them Among the bakers dozen were Broomster brother to the dead Bniomspun Toil brother to Dunboyne Sunreigh brother to Sim Briar and Finn Friend half brother to Audacious The best con ¬ sidered were Mustard Seed the favorite the Cos den Stables Bigheart and the Whitney pair Broom ¬ ster and Olympus The Whitney pair were won ¬ derfully backed just before post time The Whit ¬ ney Stable support was wisely placed at the right time Tho race was a fine one after five minutes skirmishing at the post in which Toil and Bravo were most offensive offensiveWhen When the barrier released the field Black Rascal Bigheart and Broomster were best away Toil cut across in front of his horses and blocking Mustard Seed virtually put the Bull colt out of the rontost Toil joined Black Rascal Broomster and Bigheart nt once and the four came into tin straight lapped Black Rascal is quick but not enduring when speed is ivolongod and soon retired 1 oilman rid ¬ ing Broomster stoutly at the middle of the stands length was able to relieve him then and the Whit ¬ ney colt came on to win easily by two lengths Toil lusted to be second then had to be hard driven to stall off the rush of Bioomsters stablcinatc the Royal Eagle Paradise II colt Olympus which seemed to run in an inexperienced sort of way until between the stretch and sixteenth posts He caught the sting of Clarence Kummers whip lash Then Olympus awoke and raced home like a lion He was coming in third place fnsrer than any other horse at the end and was a mere half length behind Toil Sun Briars brother was fourth two lengths behind Olympus and running stoutly after he and June Grass had bumped and impeded one another The other relative of speed and racing prowess Audacious halfbrother Firm Friend was a trailer throughout throughoutROCKPORT ROCKPORT A REPEATER REPEATERWhile While the two stake contests ovenhadowed all else in racing importance there was much move ¬ ment in and after the fifth race in which the ancient W C Daly scored again with Roekport which had won at long odds last Monday Rock port was in one of those oldfashioned affairs over ten and a half furlongs of ground with the start before the stand and a field of seven thirdrate selling platers as actors It was a qucerly run race The luck broke with Roekport The younger Kummer rode him well and always Dark Hill the stout choice made his own pace with Roekport as attendant Dark Hill drew away on the turn but Roekport closed again there and to the straight and could not be eliakeu off Au ciglitU out park 11111 tired bored out and bumped King Albert Both were checked Roekport at the rails he was lucky to get through impeded American Boy which was making his run inside and lasted to win in a staggering sort of way by a lonrf head from American Boy which could have won But for his collision with Dark Hill King Vlbert might have won wonThe The racing of the afternoon was full of speed and good looks Four favorites won bless em There was a crowd of nearly 20000 out the weather wasnt as lifeless as that of three afternoons past and the speed of the going was shown by John 1 Griers groat mile mileThere There have been faster tracks and on one of such the Whitney colt could have given the American turf a new mile mark to hang up for future turf figures to equal equalSam Sam Hildreth scratched all of the Rancocas Stable entries of the day for want of a rider Sande and Fator the first and second string pilots of this stable are serving suspensions and Enscr upon whom Hildreth holds third call was set down by the stewards for the remainder of the meeting after having ridden Stock Pin in the first Ensor was in unfit condition to ride rideThree Three other riders ran afoul of official dis ¬ pleasure in the course of the afternoon and each of them will view the sport from the ground for the next five racing days The three are Rodriguez Haynes and Miller Starter Cassidy dealt out the suspension to this trio trioMat Mat Smart representing S Ross sold the threo yoarold Page Brook to the
