CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF Former United States Senator Joseph AV. Bailey of Texas has fourteen thoroughbred mates and seven foals at his Kentucky breeding farm. J. C. Milam will begin this week to break and educate the big band of J. N. Camden yearlings, comprising twenty-five head ten colts and fifteen .fillies. The stallion Marse Abe. by Yankee Halo, by St. Blaise, was recently purchased by Thomas Mason of Santa Barbara, Cal., where he will stand in the future. i Out of an original entry list of 245 nominations for the 0,000 Hopeful Stakes, to be ruu at the coming Saratoga meeting, 148 aristocrats of the two-year-old division still remain eligible for that valuable fixture. It lias recently been decided by .the English Courts of Probate that the late Walter AVinans was an American witb a legal domicile in Maryland, U. S. A., and that he was uot, as argued, for tax collection purposes, a citizen of either Belgium or England, in which countries he had long lived. In South Africa last, year the total amount of slakes wan ,728,110, ami this was competed for by 2,400 horses. The win per horse average works out at ?720, and as it costs a little over ,000 a. year to train and race a horse in South Africa, jnuuy people must have been out a lot of pocket.
