FAMOUS ASCOT MACE MEETING EVERY RACE A STAKE EVENT-- TOTAL VALUES FOR TWENTY-EIGHT RACES IN FOUR DAYS AMOUNT TO 02,243 DAILY A VERAGE ,222.96 As a social function the splendor of the English Ascot race meeting surpasses all else in the world. For months in advance of its arrival titled, wealthy and fashionable femininity, from the Queen of England down, is intent in the creation and fashioning of raiment that shall dazzle all beholders, when first revealed at Hoyal Ascot. Rut that is not all. lirilllaut as Ascot is in that respect, it is equally striking and unrivaled in its racing department. Of all race meetings of the wide world, it is alone in its glory of a meeting of which every race is a stake race. It does not run to ostentation in excessively large sums to he Avon in any of its events, hut all are of substantial value, quite worthy of the high-class horses which annually contest their honors. Englands best clash there anil meet the champion horses of France. So high is the standard of Ascot racing that it is held that a horse which can win a race there can win on any other track, against the best class opponents. Thus an Ascot winner at once gains inclusion in the more select class of equine aristocracy. Particularly is a Gold Cup winner at once elevated to the loftiest pinnacle of horse fame. This supreme test of ability to stay over a long course, under high weight, was instituted nearly a century ago on the occasion of a visit to England by Czar Nicholas of Russia. Nicholas added a trophy in a massive gold cup for the winner. The race was then and afterward for a time called the "Emperors Cup," but was eventually changed to the simpler appellation of the Gold Cup. It is the chief prize of Ascot racing and ardently coveted by all owners of a good horse.
