RANCOCAS TRIPLE Y1CT0RY IVlad Hatter, Kai-Sang and Grey Lag its Three Winners. Kai-Sang-s Success in East View Stakes Comes After Runstar Is Disqualified. NHW YOKK. N. V., July J?,. ltunstar, the California colt of more swd ami reputation than manners, lost the .0,000 Kast View Stakes at Umpire City today because lie couldnt run straight. He. had no other excuse. Off well and in his stride in front, with a cloar path. Bunstar weak-cued when gamely assailed with speed by the Ban-corns Stables colt Kai-Sang, headed and bumped hi? rating antagonist and enabled Metcnlf, his rider, to foully impede Kai-Sang and to leg-lock aud prevent Sande, Kai-Sangs rider, from winning. Ruustur generally misbehaved himself in the dosing eontentiou of the raee and was correctly disqualified for his faulty performance, the ,300. first prize lieing awarded to Kai-Sang. Metealf. bis rider, was also punished justly. It wasnt a fast-run raee. The Kast View was over the Futurity short six furlongs, for which Old Kocnigs 1918 1:071-, is the speed mark. There were no ten second furlongs and no thir.ty-three . second three furlongs in Hnnstars front racing. Facta are facts, and the Bunnymede colt in the face of them rather showed the white feather under pressure. Had manners arc handicaps always, of course, but in the running of the Kast View it seemed as .it own the scant three-quarters -was beyond Bun- lslars compass. lie is a massive colt, of fine action and speftiUlmtso -far-losing sjx.-ed and work speed appear to" be his forte, Bunstar has raced three times as a philanderer. There isnt much doubt but that he will improve, but as between hiin and his ex-stable mate of more generosity and docility Morvich there is no present comparison as racing colts. METCALF TO BLAME TOR FOUL. There were eight select in the Kast View field. The nimble leginning Little Chief Fator and the more sedate and superior Kai-Sang Sande, under the Baneoeas white and green, were the natural favorites and staunchly supported. ltunstar and Mustard Seed wen? both broadly backed. Tiie start was perfect and early, with June Grass in front. He showed a free footed way for nearly a quarter of a mile, with ltunstar and Penitent in attendance. With profuse speed Hnnstar then assumed command to the stretch. Here Kai-Sang moved up. Penitent had been roughed and impeded and was eased, and June Grass was fading away. For a furlong Kai-Sang pressed ltunstar hard and the Californian. weakening, bogan to roll, so to MTite, leaned over and bumped Kai-Sang and forced Sande and Metealf together so that, their legs were locked. Sande reported that they were. At the winning post Bunstars nose was in front the racing nod of odd strides put it there. Kai-Sang was three lengths before his stable companion, Little Chief, and Mustard Seed two more lengths behind him. Mustard Seed seemed to lack his usual insistent speed, though he met with some interference to throw off his stride and had to race widely. It was obvious to all watchers cf the finish that ltunstar would be disqualified, and ho was deceivingly. The stewards also suspended Motealf from further action at the meeting for bis dirty work at the finish. Metealf obviously didnt use any effort to straighten out his tiring mount. Instead, he appeared only to want to win by foul means, even to the extent of a misapplied whip. Metealf s case gees to the stewards of the Jockey Club. His punishment is likely to be extended. It was a nasty piece of foul riding. There was much expressed dissatisfaction after the disqualification. There usually is. One extra demonstrative spectator was "given the gate." The talent got a facer to begin with. The Boy had run a good race under stout backing IHiiml Lunetta and Guvnor Thursday. where he ran as if short. The I.oy was in the Bye seller over the short three-quarters course against Sunflash II., the elderly Baneoeas sprinter, which had Sande up and was a reasonable odds-on favorite. Only Ihe two were considered, as It511y McLaughlin and "Vyellfinder were absentees. The Boy won on bis merits. Sunflash II. was mildly restrained in front to the last furlong. Then Ifaynes who can ride excellently brought up The l!oy with a peremptory challenge on the outside, which Sunflash II. couldnt resist and, in a handsome finish. The Hoy won by it head in the last dozen strides. Sunflash II. swerved from the Sande whip in the closing utrldes. The trio of moderates behind, headed by Staunch, were four lengths away. It seemed as If Sunflash II. was the short one this time. MAD HATTERS FINE RACE. There was a stake field in the entries for the Cos-wopolitau Handicap of a mile and seventy yards. Here seemed the place for some of the selling race funds which so often go awry. Itashful owners drew all the teeth of interest. Inrehase and Mad Hatter must, have frightened five of the entries iiway. Purchase left the Baneoeas chance to Mail Hatter. Hut Yellow Hand. Koyoe Bools, Dimmes-dale and Dr. Joe were absent too. and consequently it was merely a fast gallop for Mad Hatter, at 1 to 8 and less, to win all the way and by a half a dozen lengths at the finish from Recount and Snapdragon II. Mad Hatters trip was rather sightly for its ease, for speed and actiou. He is in rare fettle just now. The quarters were well rated the second ju 215 secouds. The mile was in 1 ::tS !f, . the fastest of the Umpire. City present meeting, and the eatcd-up finish in 1:13, less than a second slower than St. Isidores track record of 1:5-;.. Suudo had no whip Mith him. rood I Good! If the. fiue young rider will lose all the whips in hs kit Rancocas and its horses will do better. It isnt that Sande cannot be trusted with a whip. He Hiti j whip or.? mere acquaintances; not rrlende. Biul tools spoil good mechanics. Qiu tinucd iu set-owl yaye. I RANCOCAS TRIPLE VICTORY Continued from flrst pdge. Old Phalaris is a bad horse nowadays, ne needs some new legs, and a rest. Clancys old gelding was sharply chosen to win the mile and seventy yards Geneseo claimer, fifth on the card, antoiig eight, all that were left of fifteen entered plebeians. Phalaris failed most dismally. He had neither speed nor disposition to Avin and, off slowly and hcmuied in always. Fa tor could do nothing to induce him even to try. Scotch Verdict rendered won the Geneseo. Eusor was up and rode the Shaffer horse one of the races he can ride when in form. lie saved Scotch Verdict in the early running, headed the rapid Episode on the turn and kept Scotch Verdict going long enough to win under a hard drive by a length from the fast-coming Pirate MeGco, well warmed by the persevering Master Penman in tlie last furlong. Old Mose closed a lot of ground up the stretch and weakened in the final drive, but was third. Phalaris and His Thoughts were beaten alKmt eight lengths. Grey Lag is in great form, just now. As he races on he seems to gather and exude quality. In the .,200 Knickerbocker Handicap, at eight furlongs and a half, tins grandson of Star Shoot and Miss Minnie, an odds-on favorite, shouldered 13." pounds nineteen more than that for his age and route and beat Careful, Copper Demon and Knobbie as he chose, in l:L"i, which is but two-fifths of a secomf off the track record of 1:4-1, held jointly by Rorrow, in 191-1, under mi pounds, and Spur, in 1917. under 122. Grey Lags was a superior performance to the record. It was so easily and ster-lingly done, too. Only the four started. Dry Moon was declared. Careful, from her Saratoga quarters for the race and good set the pace. It Was smart, the quarter in 23 and half in 47. Sande and Grey Lag lay away third to the turn. Then they moved up, took the lead and a had a smart gallop home lo win by nearly three lengths,-, the three-quarters in l:12"s. mile in 1:38. a fifth of a second faster than the tracks mile record P.oots, 1!1, 1:38, under 110 pounds. Careful was a busy second, three lengths before Copper Demon, with Knobbie used early for pacing twelve lengths back. Grey Lag is a magnificent horse at present. Sam Hildreth keeps his kind in form. Unless loaded to thejack breaking point the western three-year-olds or oldsters will not take his measure at Saratoga. He is great in gait, disposition and courage, and seems to liave the rare gift of instant speed and balance in .his racing. There was a big crowd at. the Yonkers course. It filled all points of vantage. The racing ground was as fast as it will be this year. The air was hot and full of sun. Only a cloud veil tempered Hie glare and it was without permanence. There never was a better afternoons racing over the Yonkers course. All the action of the afternoon was sharp and full of incident. The demonstration over Runstars disqualification was out of line and illy directed, because the decision was just. Four favorites won their races. Sande rode three winners, and Raucccas, through Mad Hatter, Grey Iag and Kai-Sang, won some ?M,-139 during the afternoon. CLARENCE TURNER MAY LOSE EYE. Clarence Turner was about the paddock -with his right eye shielded, as a result of the injury caused by a flying stone when he rode Court View on Friday. The specialist, who is treating the injured member will be unable to tell until tomorrows examination the probable exteht of Turners injury. Coming at this time the blow is especially severe, since Turner was just rounding to his best form, or "getting lucky," as riders call it. Sam Louis, who claimed Hudana from the Ran-cocas stable, resold the filly to that establishment. Nathan Straus, who, since his retirement from active business a few- years ago, has devoted his time to philanthropic work, was at the course renewing old acquaintances. Among those with whom he chatted with especial interest were William Powers and "Snapper" Garrison. Mr. Straus was a devotee of the trotter, in the driving of which he was an adept, and twenty-five years ago was associated with former mayor Hugh J. Grant in the ownership of thoroughbreds. Among his good thoroughbred horses was Joe Ripley, on which "Daredevil" Fitzpatrick won a brace of stakes at 7rorris Park and Gravesend. Hecause of the failure of the original third race on Mondays program to fill, the first dash was split and will be run as the first and third races. This gives two-year-olds the call in two of the six races to be run Monday. Jockey Mooney is confined to his bed by bruises suffered when he fell from Pansy on Thursday. In an apparent attempt to obtain vengeance, upon jockey Sande, Metcalf, astride Knot Grass in the sixth race, pulled over on Cloughjordan in the early running, and this fact has leen added to the report tiiat the Empire stewards made to the stewards of the Jockey Club when they referred Metcalfs case to that body as a result of his having fouled Kai-Sang. Metcalf was suspended for the remainder of the meeting for his actions on Ruustar. James Rqwe, Jr.,. arrived from Saratoga to spend a few days. He denied the seriousness of the rumor concerning the illness of John P. Grier and Upset, but stated that neither of the Whitney horses has; been given more than light gallops at Saratoga. E. R. Rradley, master of Idle Hour Farm, departed last night for Saratoga. From there he will go to AVindsor to see his colors borne in the Devonshire International by Hlaek Servant. Grey Lag will be the colts chief opponent in the rich race. After its decision" Mr. Rradley-s horses will be chipped to Saratoga. -
