WEST VIRGINIA FAIR RACING Running Races with Five and Six Hundred Dollar Purses to Feature Program. WHEELING, W. Va., July 2S. When the Wheeling Driving Club inaugurated running races here last spring iu the staging of a ten-day meeting, the thoroughbreds won such favor with the local public that the management of the West Virginia State Fair has announced the major part of its speed program this year will be devoted to the thoroughbreds. The Fair opens on September " and continues throughout the week. During the live days twenty-three or more running races will be programmed. While only tentative arrangements have been made at this date, present indications are that the purses will be $.100, with ,00 handicaps. On Labor Day seven running races will comprise the program. The feature will be the Inaugural Handicap as the fourth race, with a purse of 1921.sh00. On Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at least four races will be run, with 00 purses. The West Virginia Handicap will feature the Thursday program, carrying a 1921.sh00 purse. Secretary Kert Swartsi is arranging the condition liooks governing the races, which will be distributed later. Kut Wheeling is not the only city where the public demand has caused the fair associations to devote a big part of the speed programs to running races. The same condition exists at Erie and Con-ueaut Lake Park, Pa., as well as other West Virginia cities. As a result, a running circuit is in the making. The Erie fair opens August 22, and the management announces a program similar to that to be given here will be carded. Coiineaut Lake Park follows the week of August 2!, and at the conclusion of the latter meeting tin? horses will be shipped here for the following week. One or two other West Virginia cities will follow Wheeling.
