inaugural day attractions SARATOGA HANDICAP, FLASH STAKES AND SHILLELAH STEEPLECHASE THE INTRODUCTORY FEATURES Of SARATOGAS GREAT AUGUST MEETING The Saratoga Handicap, Flash Stakes and Shillclah Steeplechase are the triple racing attractions of the opening day program at Saratoga next Monday, August 1. In addition to these stake features the purses for the three overnight races will include surplus claiming bids of ,050, which the Saratoga Racing Association received during the last two days of the summer meeting of 1920. That sum will be divided into three equal amounts, or , 210. CO for each race. The return of Purchase to the races and the probability of his starting in the Saratoga Handicap has intensified the interest in that popular fixture. Purchase won this race as a three-year-old, a feat only four other horses of that age were able to duplicate. If he starts Monday and wins. Purchase will have the further distinction of winning under the highest weight ever carried successfully in the race, as he has been assigned 133 pounds. The never-to-be-forgotten Roamer won this fixture three times in 191.", 1917 and 1918. The fastest time is that of Sir Barton, when lie was victorious last year in 2:01, with 129 pounds up. The Saratoga Handicap was established in 1901, the first year being run at 1 1-8 miles, the second year at 1 3-lf! miles and since then at the present distance of 1 1-4 miles. Its history is a iccital of the great deeds of great horses and is here presented in tabulated form: iear. First. Age. Jockeys. Wt. Second. Age. Wt. Third. Age. Wt. Val. Time. 1901Rockton 4 N.
