ENGLISH BREEDING FIGURES Cyllene Marcs Are the Best Producers to Date Lord Astor Is Leading Breeder. BY E. E. COUSSELL. LONDON, England, August 4. The leading sires of the dams of winners in England and Ireland from the beginning of the flat racing season to the end of July are as follows: Races Won Value. Cyllene ii 28,015 Desmond 23 75.GS0 Gallinule 29 " 09,312 Eager 22 M.285 Sundridge li 5,1195 St. Frusquin 25 05,227 AVilliam the Third 22 50,980 The next in order are: Melton, 7,050; Isinglass, 1,007; Persimmon, 0,745; Sainfoin, 0,547; Ayrshire, 4,7S0; Santoi, 3,537; Marco, 3,387; Polymelus, 3,205. Craig an Eran has won 0,725 of the total credited to Cyllene, the next best winner being Donna Branca, by Swynford, with 8,000. Fire-fiend, by Torloisk, has helped to swell the total. Desmond to a large extent relies on the One Thousand Guineas heroine Bettina, which won 1,000. Gallinule was at the head of the list last year. This year his danghters best winners are Lemonora, Spearwort and Great Joy. Naturally the total given above does not take into account the value of the Grand Prix de Paris won by Lemonora. Bally-heron, 1,075, and Orpheus, 6,200, are the best of the produce of mares by Eager. Polyhistor, probably our best colt, has for dam a mare by Florizel II., whose total is 8,055, of which the colt just named and his brother Poly-mestor have won 4,725. There are only three mares by Meddler in the English Stud Book. They have produced a couple of winners, viz., Ellen Gibby end, Branxholme, which have capturpd six races worth ,847. JNoowa, the dam of the last mentioned filly, is again in the United States in Mr. B. Combs stud at Lexington. She had a colt foal this yoar and he is a full brother to Branxholme. Doubtless there will be numerous changes before the end of the season. Lust season Cyllene was third in the list with the winners of S100.190. Yet in the December sales at Newmarket teven of his daughters were sold for the small average price of ,030, the highest sum given being ,350. Considering their record, for Grand Parade and Dominion have Desmond mares for dams, they were not in extravagant demand. At the end of tho year seven daughters of Desmond averaged ,S50. XiOrd Astor is at the head of the list of successful breeders for the first half of the year. He has had five winners of seven races, value 2,730. Mr. S. B. Joel is pressing very closely with fifteen winners of nineteen races .worth ,7G7. Provided Craig an Eran keeps well it will be a most interesting struggle between these owners. The next on the list are: Sledmere Stud 8 11 1921.sh1,720 Joel, J. B 8 11 00,710 Derby, Lord i 11 45,440 Raphael, W 4 5 44,230 Greenall, Sir C 4 5 39,935 Hulton, Sir E 14 20 39,125 Neumann, L 2 5 38,050 P.obinson, Sir J 0 10 34.S00
