GRAND SARATOGA MEETING , ALL PREVIOUS RECORDS BROKEN WHEN 86,990 IS 1 DISTRIBUTED DURING TWENTY-SEVEN DAYS OF GLORIOUS RACING BENJAMIN BLOCK LEADING WINNER THROUGH SUC- CESSES OF THE UNBEATEN COLT MORVICH Glorious Saratoga racing has come and gone. Wonderful were the displays of speed . and stamina of the beautifully-bred and skillfully trained creatures of the thoroughbred 1 world, in competition for the valuable and coveted turf trophies offered by the Saratoga j Racing Association. Often styled the "Ascot of America," Saratoga lived up to its reputation. There gathered the beautj- and wealth of the nation; statesmen, financiers, men and women : famous in art, literature, theatrical and commercial circles; visitors from all over the United States, Canada, Cuba andabroad. They came for pleasure and were royally enter- , tained.. The chief entertainment, of course, was the racing. And what glorious racing it was! With the best hordes of the land pitied against each other, it would have been surprising if it had been otherwise. From the first day, when the peerless Miss. Joy revealed her charms and quality in the Flash Stakes and Yellow Hand triumphed oyer Mad Hatter after a great -contest in the Saratoga Handicap, until the final afternoon, ; wfien vMorvich won the rich ; . Hopeful Stakes mid the gallant Exterminator walked over for the Saratoga Cup, there Avas t-carcely u day tlvJt rlid not bring its thrill and uncontest worthy of the place and the horses cpnipeting,- . , :r i-Tlie aratogatftHTiijj? association;" eTerrogfessive antfoud of its past glories, . made , tuch racing possible by surpassing all its previous records in the matter of money distribution, 1 giving away, in stakes and purses, the grand total of 386,990 for twenty-seven days of racing, the daily average distribution amounting to 4,332. Each year since 1913, when racing was resumed in New York state after a two-year suspension, on account of hostile betting legislation, with the exception of 1915, a steady increase has been made in Saratogas monetanjistribution, as will be seen by glancing over the following tabulation: Daily Total Daily Total Distri- Distri- . Distri- Distri- Year. bution. bution. This year there were thirty-four such fixtures, and the Hopeful was the most valuable of them. By winning it Morvich enriched his owner to the extent of 4,900. Morvich also won two other choice plums when he accounted for the Saratoga Special, df4he net value of 10,500, and the United States Hotel Stakes, worth 9,075 to the winner. TJic speedy Miss Joy also won three stake features, but their monetary value was considerably less than the three won by Morvich. In a great measure the success and popularity of Saratoga racing is due to this great array of annual stake races, and the only disappointing note in connection with their running is the small fields in the long distance contests. There should never be a "walk-over" in such a famous race as the Saratoga Cup. The only redeeming feature of it was that it was the gallant Exterminator, twice winner of the race previously, that "walked over" for it. Here is the grand and valuable array of stake races that brought glory and. money to their winners: Stakes. Dale. Winner. Value. GRAND SARATOGA MEETING Continued from first page. The possession of one high-class horse lias, in times past, brought fame and fortune to the owner. Benjamin Block of New York, a newcomer to the turf, first secured a halt interest in Morvich, then later bought him outright. With this one horse Mr. Block has become prominent overnight, as it were, and gained honors for which other men have spent fortunes, only to meet witli disappointment. Mor-viclis three stake victories placed Mr. Blocks name at the top of the list of the money-winning owners at Saratoga, witli the imposing total of 4,475. For the first time this year the Rancocas Stable had to be content with second place, but there is much satisfaction in the fine record that establishment made in winning ten races, finishing second in ten others and accounting for 3,044. Despite many and grievous disappointments during the entire year, the H. P. Whitney stable has not figured importantly wherever engaged, except in Kentucky, and it did well at Saratoga, with eleven victories and 9,87G to its credit. From an owners standpoint Edward R. Bradley certainly has just and weighty reasons to feel chagrined over the failure of his stable at Saratoga. After sweeping everything before him at the early spring and summer meetings in Kentucky and winning more races than lie had ever won before in his career on the turf, it was indeed disappointing to the master of Idle Hour Farm to eome to Saratoga and leave there without even one victory to his credit. Such, however, was the case, and only goes to strikingly illustrate the beautiful uncertainty of racing. The owners who won $."00 or more during the meeting are as follows: Owner. 1st. 2d. 3d. Amt. His three stake victories, worth 4,47".. t only stamped him as the best colt of his age, but helped to repay his fortunate owner for the huge outlay of money required to secure him. The Rancocas Stables game Kai-Sang. that three times tried and failed to wrest the laurels from Morvich, was the second laigcat winner among the horses. He won 1,750.
