BAD START MARS FEATURE j- Favorite and Two Others Left at Post in Hiawatha Handicap. I . Lady T Baltimore the Winner in Tight Finish Marinem in Spot Light. NEW YORK, N. Y.. October 13. J. B. CoBdens L Lady Baltimore defeated a good band of twor y year-old fillies in the Hiawatha Handlcau at J1 Jamaica today. She won ,375 for her owner. S Second money went to Bees Wax and third tb Mary Patricia. The running of the stake was marred by one o: of the worst starts of the metropolitan fall season. 1 Three of the nine starters, including the favorite. E Emotion, were practically left at the post and n never got into contention. Those which got away well had a great advantage. Penitent had the ji jump on the rest of the field, but she gave way t to Lady Baltimore when the latter challenged. K Kummer slipped through the Cosden filly next to tl the inner rail, took the lead, but was forced to a h hard drive through the stretch to withstnnd Beea "V Waxs fast and game closing challenge. Bees Wax showed a tendency to bear out nil the w way and Ponce was forced to pull her up before h he could get her to go around the leaders. IE sJ slip had fouud clear passage she would have won h in all probability, as she closed rapidly through tl the stretch aud almost overhauled the winner. j Mary Patricia was outrun to the turn, but she c closed a big gap in the stretch and had little t trouble in holding safe the remainder of the field f for the short end of the stake. Monastery, favored by a good start, defeated A Alexander Hamilton in the first race. The Sweep c colt, showing soreness going to the post, was d deserted by the talent and drifted from favoritism t to second choice at the close. He dwelt at the s start and failed to race to his recent good form. 3 Monastery started well and closely followed Rolo t to the turn, where the Coburn starter relinquished t the lead to the . Redstone Stables representative. i From there on Monastery was master of the situation 1 and won by three lengths. Marinelli made it a double by riding Tody to ah e easy victory from Marie Maxim and Edwina in the 3 Mazeppa Selling Handicap, at a mile and seventy J yards. The performance of the Kilmer filly T was a decided disappointment, although she did c carry top weight of 123 pounds. In the early part o of the race she was so badly outrun that she followed 1 the leaders by ten lengths. After that she drew up, but was not equal to the task of overtaking 1 Tody or Marie Maxim. Tody won by four 1 lengths from Marie Maxim, while Edwina was t three lengths farther back. THREE IN ROW FOR MARINELLI. Marinelli made it three In a row with Wrecker i in the third race, incidentally completing a double 1 for the Redstone Stable. Cote dOr was sec nd s and Titanium third. The latter set the early puce, 1 but Wrecker raced him into defeat at the lower t turn and drew away in the stretch. He fought it t out with Cote dOr when the latter challenged and 1 held a safe advantage at the end. .Pavia was t shuffled back at the start and although she Improved j her position gradually she could never work i into contention. Fator got Crack o Dawn away from the barrier i ahead of the others in the fifth race and raced j away into a long lead on the backstretch. Turner, on Gem. worked his way up, disposed of tha rest of the field entering the stretch and just missed heading Crack o Dawn by an eyelash at the end. Jock Scot was third. Jock Scot was a slow starter and dropped back on the first turn. He closed rapidly turning out of I the backstretch and made a game effort to overhaul the leaders under pressure. He did not appear I to be so fast as usual, however; perhaps the chill ; atmosphere had penetrated his aged joints and i slowed him up at least he failed to bother the 1 leaders seriously. The finish was bo close between Gem and Crack o Dawn that the spectators waited In silence until i the official posting. A great shout of derision i went up when number two was hung up. The number belonged to Dark Hill, which was scratched. The error was quickly corrected and Crack o Dawns number posted. FINAL DASH TO HEPHAISTOS. , Hephaistos scored over Fltzgibbon and Twenty Seventh Division in the final race. McAtee sent the Vulcain colt to the front at once and opened up a big gap on the backstretch. When Fitzgibbon 1 challenged in the stretch it seemed for a brief space ! that Hephaistos would weaken, but McAtees urging brought ready response and the colt held his lead I 1 by a length at the finish. Twenty Seventh Division ! met with considerable interference, but easily I held the others safe for third money. I The stewards were dissatisfied with Edwlnas 1 race in the Mazeppa and questioned Wilson on his j . 1 return to the judges stand. The jockey infonnd them that the mare showed signs of indisposition j in the paddock before the race and did not run to her best form. Marinellis riding was an outstanding feature. He rode the first three winners of the afternoon, scoring with Monastery, Tody and Wrecker. He finished third In the stake feature with Mary Patricia. Jockey L. Penman came to Jamaica to ride Penitent in the Hiawatha and left Immediately after. I I the race for Churchill Downs, where he will ride one of the Whitney starters In the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes on Saturday. Trainer James Rowe sent jockey Coltiletti from Luurel to ride either Rocket, Cherry Tree or Brainstorm in the same race. . ., Jockey M. Buxton was an arrival from Windsor today. He reports that of the horses owned by his brother ten were shipped direct from Kenil-worth to Empire City. Wrecker was claimed out of the third race by 1 Albert Simons for ,560.
