] i FRENCH RACING PROSPEROUS * a gg Baron Rothschilds Horses, American Ridden, Most Formidable. » a _i Macomber Stables Remarkable "Slump* — Auteuil Jumping Course Being Made Over. i— — ■ 8 1 PARIS. France. January _ Fiom a purely sporting point of rteW the year lflll has been a notable one for the French tnrf. A distinct recovery from the effects ••! war privations in the bloodstock of the country has been seen, and this was partiv ularl.v pronounced in the Case of two-year-olds. There has also been a meal improvement in quantity as well as quality, ami subscriptions to the principal prizes in the racing calendar throughout the year were mori numerous than ever. Baron E. do BothachiM bends the ii--t winning owners with 8267,885, and Mine. F.dmond Blanc cenWS nevt with 8228.785, followed hy Marcel Bonaaae, 17,895. These are the only three owners who have gone aeer the 88,088 mark Then cine A. F:knayaoi. J. 1. Cohn. N. E. Ambatielos and A. K. Maeoni her in thai urder. It is iaterestinf to note that of the seven owners named, fonr Missis. Bonaaae, Eknayaa, Aashnttelaa and Macomber— have only been i.nov.n to Fieach racegoeis since 1919. A. Eknayaa, whose inns..-. von 58,818, and J. I. Cohn. wins.- horses earned 8137.288, hare only attained sntCCSS oomiiieiisui ate with their efforts, fur both these owners bai bees most lavish saa ncrihem to : classes of races throughout the year. lie Bassiaa spot I sasaa. Leoa Mantncheff, has. considering ihe small number of his baraea, a brilliant lecord, and it is possible that his stable cantatas the besl two-year-old seen oat in 1921. This is flsiana al Bachid, a light bay. upstanding son of Snidanapale. At his only public appearance he practically ran awaj with the Prix S.iin Firmin from a big field at I.iuigi hauips mi the i lusing day of the year. Harouu al Bachid made a favorable iinpressiiiu on all who witnessed the pcrforminr e, but as then- was aothtag in the opposition to give a definite value to the performance, a real estimate uf the horse c.ini"t bo made till he has met colts of proved merit. MACOMBER STABLES BAD SLUMP. A. K Macomber, aetwithatandtag the e:ensi e scale on which In- lias raced, only occupies sevtntii place in the list of winning owners. His enters have enjoyed only a moderate share of fortune, and tie consistently indifferent form of horses from the establishment at Saint -!.■ uis PoNsy constituted one of the surprises of the year. When Mr. Ma comber augmented his already Important string hy taking over the stable and stud of the late V. K. Vanderbilt. it was generally predicted that the prosperity which for many years had been assooi Bted with the famous Vanderbilt horses would descend upon the new owner, but this prediction was by no means realised. Alter- scoring a few si, , ess, s early in tin- year, the Macomber horses seemed to fall mio an unlucky sioove. and his colors played but an laconspicneoa part in the important mean. Baraa B. de Bothschlld won none of the year** great classic events, bio peel t lea at the bead of t- • winning list being due lo his numerous sacccssi ■ at f anff hemps and Chantilly. It is on these fas,; ionabie race eenraro that the Bothschlld colors are always seen to the best advantage. On three dii ferent occasions during the past year Baron E. de Rothschilds borSCS carried off the three most valuable prizes on the days pragiaiii, while a Sunday rarely passed, either rt Langchanaaa or Chantilly, without one or more triumphs for ihe bine jacket and yellow cap. The American rider of the stable. Matthew McGee. is most skillful and popular. He is expected here from America before the end of Janaarj Mine. Edmond Blanc, despite her high position in the list, must ever entertain bitter recollections of the year on account of the defeat of her colt Ksar for the irand Prix de Paris. That Ksar was not bahasM on that memorable day was conclusively proved later when he won the Prix de PArc de Tri-omphe. showing immense superiority to Flechois and Square Measure. Flechois is the most consistent classic horse of the year and had only been beaten a yard for the Jraud Prixe de laris. But such is racing fortuue. and, as all the word knows, an English beree carried off the French chief prize for the third consecutive year. REJUVENATION OF AUTEUIL COURSE. Marcel Boussae and N. E. Ambatielos, whose stables won 34.8L0, have both raced with conspicuous success. In Stern and Duke as their re-speciive trainers these sportsmen have had the co-opiralion of valuable profess, onal services, and while Mr. Boussae has obtained a full measure of success with horses of all ages Mr. Ambatielos has been specially redoubtable with his two-year-olds, in the preparation of which Duke has more than sustained his real reputation. Great activity prevails on the Auteuil jumping course on the Bate, where exteusive alterations and improvements are now in full swing. Hundreds of workers are busy clearing a way for the new track along the fortifications side of the course. Large numbers of trees have to be removed before I he laying out of this course can be commenced, and all this must be completed in readiness for the reopening in February. The contemplated reconstruction of the stands is not likely to be started until after the Grand Steeplechase de Paris and Begad Course de Haies have been decided next June, so that it will be months yet before race goers will have their new race course at Auteuil complete. Now that the Societe Sportive dEncour Bgensenl has decided to hold no more steeplechase and hurdling fixtures at Maisons I«arfitte. Parisians have only two raaanag— AateUll and Enghein— available for this branch of racing, and the question of a new course to replace the old one at Saint Ouen is becoming more pressing than ever.
