CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF Matt Smart has about fifteen horses in his care at the old Benning track in Washington. Watterson Showalter. Scott County breeder, died last week at his home in Ceorgetown. Ky. C W. Forman has fifteen horses wintering at Bow ie, which will be ready for early spring racing in Maryland. Jockey Ensor is reported to lie galloping horses daily at Pimlico and is said to be down to 10-5 pounds and in fine condition. S. Bush, the negro steeplechase rider, who formerly rode in this country, has sailed for France, where he exacts to .secure an engagement. Max Hirsch and his wife have left for Palm Beach. Fla.. on their annual vacation. They may-visit Havana, Cuba, before returning to New York. Charles Hughes, who has charge of the K. F. Simms estate at Saratoga, is a New York visitor. The winter breezes of the Spa apparently agree with trainer Hughes, as he appears younger and extremely well. The present Australian champion horse. Eur.vth-mic. has had no luck in the race for the Melbourne Cup. Though he has twice beaten Foitrel. the Melbourne Cup winner and popular idol he displaced. Eurythmic has failed in two races for the coveted 1 trophy ancl its 0,000 stake.
