. , , ! , I OIL MAN COLT OF PROMISE "Gusher Bill" Rowes Three-Year-Old Candidate for This Years Stakes. The fast, immature, leggy and long striding colt Oil Man, which "Gusher Bill" Rowe of Shreeveport. La., brought to New York last year, will be in the 1922 three-year-old stakes. Oil Man has wintered under Charles J. Caseys eye at New Orleans and excellent reports come north about bis growth and condition. Oil Man impressed one early last summer as the sort that should be laid away for future action. The colt came to New York with a shiny reputation. He raced early at Belmont Park and failed when enormously backed to win by his owner, who was financially bent by the failure. Oil Mans costliest defeat was in his first Belmont race. Sweep By and Co. beat him. He was coming fast at the end, but raced as if he didnt like to. or didnt know why he was in contention. After two more defeats Oil j Man won purse races at Empire and Saratoga. He was third to Morvich and Kai-Sang in the United States Hotel Stakes at the Spa — a good race— and fourth in the Grand Inion — tangled up early and coming fast at the finish again Oil Mans next racing effort, the Adirondack Handicap, was his best. He won with decision and good speed the three-quarters in 1:11% under 119 pounds, and beat Modo. Sir Hugh, Little Chief, ialantman. Toil. Mustard Seed. Missionary and Ray lay. After that the colt ran a distinctly bad race in the Albany Handicap. Caligula beat him in an all-aged race at Laurel, and he beat a fair lot at Pimlieo in easy fashion. Favorite for the Wal-den Stakes, off well, and without excuse. Oil Man ran another dull race. That ended bis seasons racing. All through the season the colt raced as his frame and work indicated that he would race — spottily and with flashes of future promise and quality. In twelve races Oil Man won four times, and earned ,233. His seasons doings are shown below: Race. Track. Wt. Rider. Dist. Time. Fin. Val. Purse 113 Haynes Belmont 4 1-2 f :32% Unp.
