April 1. — Jockey Wilsons i riding here yesterday elicited much favorable comment - from even the veteran horsemen, who are not t pi one to shower compliments on a young rider. . Wilson scoted with Laura Cochran iii the fourth 1 aud Katherine Rankin la the fifth race. Both 1 contests were at a mile, and Wilsons riding really brongbl about the dual victory. In the fourth race the lad. while astride [OUSTS Cochran. encountered much interference while I rounding the fiist turn and when he had obtained a bar path the leaders were many lengths ahead of him. I ndauuted he sent the Leonid filly jifti-i-them . and. like all of her breeding, she finished with the speed of a meteor and wore t lie pacemaker, No Wonder, down to win going away fast. WiKou demonstrated his sameness and daring in tiie fifth race, which brought forth rounds of cheering when he returned to the Winers ring with Katherine Rankin. In this race he saved every inch of grouud posible by hugging the inside rail with the mare. Rounding the last turn he had his 1 choice of going to the outside of the horses or awaiting his chance to slip through on the inside, Patiently he awaited the opportunity, which came when a small opening appeared. A timid rider would have taken the outside, but no: so with Witsoa. He whipped through the proverbial knot hob- and in less time than it takes to tell he had the mare in front by herself with victory assured. In striking contrast to the avalanche of favorites srkicfa drove down in front Thursday the talent yes- terday found that the long shots were too fleet of foot for the choices and only two of the latter wee successful. The ignominious defeat of Sherman A. presented the rather unusual spectacle of an odds-on choice finishing absolutely last. This came about in tiie seventh race, at five-eighths. Sherman A. made the pace hot aud led by a wide margin to the stretch. At this point his advantage was four lengths. Here the faint-hearted runner gave up and quit. The rest of the field flew past him as if he were tied to a post. The winner was Miss Dunbar, with I. W. Harper and Klla Waste next in order. The defeat of Bardora can be attributed to that mare falling lame. Entering the Stretch sue appealed to have the race at her mercy, as she had raced under stout restraint during Hie early running. When jockey Williams sat down to tide her she failed to respond as had been expected. This gave Dainty Lady a sinecure on the winners end of the purse and the Irwin mare just managed ta outstay Bardora. It was noted that the latter came back to the paddock quite lame. Judge David, somewhat of an outsider, was easily best of the others. A carload of horses is expected to get under way tomorrow headed for Leaiagtoa, Ky. It will ton-tain the horses of various owners. William St. Vincent will load Rapid Stride, Sir Joint Vergne, Jane A.. Betty Mae and the untried colt rrssalt. The latter is by .1. F. Crowley sad ftoat Maid, and is said to be a promising youngster. Others in the ear will be Proclamation. Mt. Rose II. anil Bob Baker, tbee being the property of A. L. Austin. J. J. Iloltman will be another turfman to be represented ill the shipment. a
