OPPOSITION TO NEW STAKE Cha; — »n August Belmont of Jockey C:ub *ym Latonias 0,000 Race. NEW YORK, N. Y., A -August Bel mont, chairman of the . _.iyy Club, has issued a statement declaring that the offering of a new 0,000 race for three-year-olds to be run at the Latonia summer meeting will not serve "the best interests of the turf." The new race, as announced by the Kentucky Jockey Club, would be run a week or ten days after the Belmont Stakes and, according to Jockey Club officials, would clash with one of the two big races of the Aqueduct meeting, the Brooklyn Handicap and the Dwyer Stakes. The Brooklyn Handicap will be run on June 16. The Brooklyn Handicap has been won on numerous occasions by three-year-olds. Mr. Belmonts statement follows : "It is to be deplored that the various racing associations in the East, Maryland and Kentucky do not co-operate for the best interests of the turf in giving an intelligent sequence of stakes, both as regards distances and values, in order that the scientifically gauged leading horses of the turf may be correctly tagged in turf history for the breeder. It happens some times, though rarely, that a horse like Man o War so outclasses his contemporaries that this accurate process of elimination is not essential. "Intelligent competition and rivalry in stakes of traditional interest is one thing, but crowding conspicuous events upon horse owners and trainers smacks a little of the commercial, and reminds one of the confused state of mind of the spectator when he attends a three-ring circus. Time is not given owners and trainers to fit their horses properly. The long journeys and unsatisfactory transportation facilities must be taken into consideration also. "This proposed race is not a stake with a history. It is only a big purse, and if it must be given at all the autumn, after the three-year-olds have fulfilled their regular engagements, is the date for it. It would 1 then have a real and useful meaning." 1 ♦
