He accom- plished the task cut out for him in 48%, after running the opening quarter in tt% and three-eighths in 35%, while Deadlock galloped an easy mile in 1 :47. Other Derby candidates in action were Chatterton, which covered a mile in 1 :47% and finished out an extra eighth in 2:00%, and Bockminister. which galloped three-. eighths of a mile in 38. Surf Rider will be shipped to Lexington to- morrow. He will be stabled at the Downs when he returns to receive his final trial for the Derby. Today was one of the few times that trainer Kay Spence exacted any high speed of him and he gave evidence that he is not wanting in this respect. Jockey "Mickey" Soobie rode him and Granite Ware was se- lected as his pacemaker. He lost his com-t panion in the first eighth of a mile, lnci-3 dentally he showed that a muddy track will not worry him any, as he never displayed the early speed over a fast course as that which marked his work this morning. Chatterton does his best when worked with a pacemaker and this morning he ran alone. He wore blinkers. His fractional time was quarter in 25, half mile in 50% and three- quarters in 1 :18%. TO STABT AT LEXINGTON. Like Surf Rider, Rockminister was given "his getaway gallop this morning at Douglas Park, as he will be included in the Spence shipment tomorrow. Prince Welles accompanied him and the two horses were kept close together, both being held well in check. The Friar Rock colt also will take quarters at the Downs when he comes back from Lexington. In all probability botli Surf Rider and Rockminister will start in the Blue Grass Stakes at Lexington and they may race twice there. Both leave here in excellent condition and they are ready to continue their hard training grind immediately upon their arrival in the blue grass capital. Just when the horsemen had settled down and concluded that the wet spell was a thing of the past, along came another wind and rainstorm at five oclock this morning, and it took only a few minutes for the two race tracks to be again sloppy. The rain poured down so hard that it beat the tracks down and while they were deep in mud both afforded a firm footing. When the skies cleared around seven oclock there was a hurried rush on the part of the trainers to get their horses into action and as a result no setback in the conditioning of these thor-y oughbreds was occasioned. Lothair, owned by W. C. Weant, pulled up in a bad way following a work-out this morning. He was so lame that jockey Wols-f tenholm was forced to dismount and lead him back to the stable. CARBOLL REID IMPROVING. Carroll Reid, veteran turfman, who underwent a second operation at St. Josephs infirmary Saturday, is reported improving and has a fair chance to recover, A division of the Williams Bros, stable is scheduled to depart for Lexington, tonior-n row.
