» MORVICH IN FAST GALLOP j NEW YORK, N. Y., April 17.— Benjamin i Blocks Morvich, leading candidate for both l the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, *• surprised a large crowd of visitors at Jamaica this morning with the fastest half-mile gallop of the training season. He covered the distance in 46%, with jockey L. Mc-Atee in the saddle. Owner Block returned from Atlantic City " to watch the colt work. He had a large party of friends at the course and watched every move of his champion with deep interest. The colt started fast and ran freely and easily all the way. What Morvich did was his best — all that was in him all the ■ way. McAtee and his tack made up some 115 pounds. The first eighth was run in the exceptionally fast time of HVs, the second in 11 Vj at the 8 same rate, third in 11% and the last in 11%. ■• The fractional time was 11%, 22%, 34, 46%. Morvich continued on for five-eighths pulled jj up in 1 :01%. Each of the eighths was better r than twelve seconds. The sensational colt is progressing so well in his preparation for his big stake engagements that an early appearance before a 1 metropolitan crowd seems likely. Trainer r Fred Burlew has signified his intention of starting Morvich in the Paumonok Handicap p for three-year-olds and over the opening day at Jamaica, providing he continues to train n satisfactorily. 4 4
