BELMONT TERMINAL RACING United Hunts Hold Curtain Raiser Raiserto to Jamaica Opening Today Old Harry Page and His Veteran Racer Gold Plate Win Fea ¬ ture of One Days Sport NEW YORK N Y May 2 Old Harry Page and his ancient hunter Gold Plate took the spotlight right away from what was meant for a feature down at the Terminal course today The ever youthful veteran rider piloted his sixteenyearold jumper to victory over the two and a half mile steeple ¬ chase course courseIt It was the curtain raiser for the biff sea ¬ son that is to begin at Jamaica tomorrow and one of the most delightful days of sport ever conducted by the association Never before has there been such a brilliant assemblage of sportsmen and the little grandstand was crowded to its capacity with women of the hunting set and their friends friendsSome Some of the fields were pruned down ma ¬ terially by the blue pencil and in one a stee ¬ plechase in which professional riders took part only one horse finished but with this exception the contests were truly first class and there were plenty of thrills from the opening threequarters mile dash to the race for gentleman riders over the same dis ¬ tance at the end of the card cardMr Mr Page and Gold Plate performed in the Biltmore Country Club Plate and the only starters against him were Mrs A F Depey sters Sweet Kiss ridden by Al Davis and W C Langleys Mar Tom with J Bosley in the saddle Gold Plate has always been much at home over the Terminal course and the old fellow looked exceedingly fit in the parade to the posL At the drop of the flag Sweet Kiss was first to show the way but she soon gave way to Mar Tom while Mr Page had his old chestnut gelding under re ¬ straint Mr Bosley permitted Mar Tom to go right along but before he had completed the first turn of the course he came down With this one out of the way Mr Page eased his hold sufficiently on Gold Plate to let him go to the front and when he saved a dozen lengths on the turn he was soon romping along with a safe lead with Sweet Kiss doing her best to keep on her feet Two fences from the finish the old sportsman lost one of his irons and his old hunter bobbled slightly but he made a quick recovery and was home an easy winner with one foot out of the stirrup stirrupGREAT GREAT APPLAUSE FOK YETERAXS YETERAXSAs As Mr Page and Gold Plate appeared on the track for the parade the band struck up Aid Lang Syne and both horse and rider were given a rousing welcome but this was nothing to the applause after the finish The horse and rider came out of the race in good condition and never in his long and honorable career on the turf had Harry Page been given more riotous applause applauseAnd And the feature race was all that it was meant to be It vas the Masters of Fox Hounds Association Plate over about three and a half miles of a post and rail course In this there were seven starters over the trying course and the only one that did not finish was Al Davis Texas Star with his owner in the saddle When running in a contending position he came down before a turn of the field was completed and for ¬ tunately both horse and rider escaped in ¬ jury juryThere There was something of a professional at ¬ mosphere about the opening threequarter mile dash when Fairbrother landed Vague from the Huntingdon Valley Farms winner from Lyke on the Greentree Stables Irish Sea while Boxwood also from the Green tree Stable was third thirdIt It was rather a bad day for the Greentree Stable for Irish Sea stumbled badly when making his bid through the final sixteenth and then in the steeplechase that also en ¬ gaged the professional riders Mohican from the same stable unseated J Rowan At the time Mohican seemed a sure winner and there appeared no sufficient excuse for Row ¬ an losing his seat This was the race in which only one horse finish Lochiel II an added starter from the Huntingdon Val ¬ ley Farms Mohican had made a slight mis ¬ take at the same fence the first time around but the last turn this fence was two from the finish and the horse jumped cleanly but Rowan seemed to throw himself from the saddle and to say the least it was no fault of the horse horseAt At the end of the program the threequar ¬ ters mile for gentleman riders saw Narosla well ridden by Penn Smith winner in a drive from Piraeus ridden by his owner J G Leiper Jr In this contest Mr Leiper de ¬ layed his challenge too long and failed to get up though his mount was undoubtedly best Fred Alpers by saving ground all the way and riding a particularly vigorous finish had H A Bournes Mandalay
