racing at Pimlico was witnessed by a larger crowd than was present yesterday for the opening day Weather conditions were again of the midsummer variety and the track lightning fast The Govans Handicap at threequarters of a mile for threeyear olds and over was the chief racing attrac ¬ tion and it brought together a fast band of Sprinters A sparkling display of speed was witnessed when the popular Jack Atkin mare Knot ran the distance in 1 11 and had she been extended would probably have sur ¬ passed Exodus mark of 111 the Pimlico track record Knots performance was a meritorious one for her first appearance under colors this year She was the favorite and delighted her many admirers by racing to the front with the rise of the barrier and dis ¬ playing terrific speed soon had her opponents outdistanced Entering the stretch she wid ¬ ened the gap between her and her nearest rival eventually winning eased up six lengths ahead of Sailing B The latter ran a credit ¬ able race considering that he was virtually left at the post and had to make up much ground to get into contention Bridesman was third finishing fast after a slow begin ¬ ning ningThe The Sunnyland Stables Faith W started the form followers off in a splendid manner when she was returned an easy winner of the opening dash for juveniles at a half mile Topango took second place and Insulate third Faith W was ridden by Morris and was an oddson choice The start was a good one Topango benefited by blinkers was away in motion and displayed good speed for the first quarter Faith W raced in closest pursuit while Insulate and Bowsprit were next in order Morris elected to come to the outside of the winner at the stretch turn and when called on disposed of the Harding starter and was under slight restraint at the finish Topango had a safe margin over Insulate for second place placeANOTHER ANOTHER FOR LE MARSOUIN MARSOUINLe Le Marsouin ridden by Specs Crawford captured the Patapsco Steeplechase over the twomile course while Infidel II and Perkio men finished second and third respectively A field of eight faced the starter and all but one finished the course Butcher Boy falling at the twelfth jump Pastora was the one to establish the early pace for the first turn of the field and was followed by Infidel II and Perkiomen with Le Marsouin racing under restraint on the outside This order was maintained for the first turn where Infidel II went to the front with a rush while Crawford was content to allow his mount to gain gradually Pastora in drop ¬ ping back blocked Formistress when the lat ¬ ter moved up the second turn of the field Formistress was in earlier trpuble when Hines lost his stirrup iron leaving the third fence Infidel II and Le Marsouin came to the final jump with but slight difference but the former could not withstand the rush of the Stockton starter starterSPANISH SPANISH 3IAIZE TAILS AGAIN AGAINStar Star Jester ridden by Mooney upset cal ¬ culations in the running of the third race when he defeated Hea Spanish Maize and seven others The winner was purchased from the Salubria Stable during the Havre de Grace meeting A field of ten faced the starter and the J 1C L Ross starter despite his recent failures was again in ¬ stalled the choice while Hea was by no means without admirers The start was a good one and Mooney quickly got his mount into motion and assumed the lead Spanish Maize and Hea were away in trouble in which the former was the chief sufferer When Turner got him clear for the run through the backstrctch he was taken to the outside and wore down his opponents Hea was racing well up within striking dis ¬ tance of the leaders Star Jester saved ground at the stretch turn while Hea and Spanish Maize both came wide The Salubria Stable starter shook off Spanish Maize but under vigorous riding could tiot get to the leader leaderThe The Lamb furnished quite a sprprise in the fourth race when he took the measure of the wellbacked Super The winner stretch but bore out and was doing his best to hold Sea Pirate safe at the end endR R T Wilsons Pillory displayed his real quality In the running of the final race of the afternoon when he dashed home an easy winner over Mercutio and By Jiminy Pil ¬ lory came from behind displaying great speed and running the mile in 139 The Seagram Stables Redstone was severely kicked while at the post by Mercutio and limped considerably previous to the start Jockey Rowan astride By Jiminy was cau ¬ tioned by the stewards to ride his mount out to the end instead of easing up when beaten beatenSerapis Serapis scored the first victory for the Pelican Stable in the East this spring when he triumphed In the mile dash run as the sixth race The winner was ridden by J Wallace and was much the best in the race The start was a good one and Plucky and Clansman were away together and estab ¬ lished the pace while Serapis was racing in third position The latter was repeatedly blocked and at the top of the stretch came around Plucky and in a drive got up in the final sixteenth sixteenthJames James Fitzsimmons brought word that the Queens County Jockey Club had purchase seventy acres adjoining the
