MISS JOYS ASHLAND OAKS Grand Filly Wins All the Way with Startle Second Deadlock Gives a Kentucky Derby DerbyHint Hint in an Easy Victory VictoryOver Over Surf Eider LEXINGTON Ky May 2 Montfort Jones brilliant Miss Joy again demonstrated her superb quality when in her threeyearold debut she triumphed in the Ashland Oaks and numbered among her victims the fleet and sturdy Startle which many held to bo Miss Joys superior Following the pair came May Blossom winner here in a former race over some good ones onesThe The Ashland Oaks is over the onemile route and on this occasion had a net value of 2950 in addition to a handsome trophy do ¬ nated by T C McDowell present master of Ashland Farm from which the stake derives its name Miss Joy and Startle had support ¬ ers of almost like number and the betting duel confined operations almost exclusively between them Startle having a slight call near the end The Jones filly pursuant to her twoyearold custom at once dashed into a good lead but her rider held her under restraint and the first quarter was at a slow pace but the succeeding one was traversed In 23 Startle being her closest follower Miss Joy did not seem to diminish her stride to any appreciable extent while going up the trying hill but Startle appeared to be a lag ¬ gard and fell back The rush through the stretch found the Montfort Jones filly still in full flight until near the end where she seemed to tire slightly Startle after appar ently being done and in danger of giving way to May Blossom suddenly roused again and finished with a rush being only a trifle more than a length away from the winner at the end The mile was covered in 139 a capital race and indicating that she will better it for the race should improve her Startle too will show to better advantage in future and a sharp battle looms up for supremacy between the two grand fillies filliesUNUSUALLY UNUSUALLY GOOD PKOGKA3I PKOGKA3ITodays Todays racing offering was an unusually good one for in addition to the Ashland Oaks the race for threeyearolds at a mile and a sixteenth had a Kentucky Derby aspect in so far as western Derby candidates were concerned Interest in this race exceeded that for the Ashland Oaks but it also fur ¬ nished an easy victory R H Shannons Deadlock winning with consummate ease from the others Surf Rider coming second and the much heralded John Finn the out ¬ standing favorite just managing to get third place from Washington Deadlocks race was one of outstanding superiority He clearly proved best of those he met this afternoon and will be the mainstay of the westerners to repel the invasion of the easterners in the coming battle for Kentucky Derby honors His race this afternoon was fully up to the expectations of his connections He finished like a stayer and the mile and a quarter dis ¬ tance on May 13 will not bother him Ho was regarded as a good colt by his former owner John E Madden but lately he has transferred his allegiance to Surf Rider The latter colt also showed an excellent perform ¬ ance and likewise indicated that the mile and a quarter distance will not bother him John Finn was a disappointment He tried to run out on the first two turns when going well and was cut oft and forced to come wide in the stretch but he indicated a dislike for a long race when he quit badly in the last sixteenth sixteenthCERTAIN CERTAIN IS DISQUALIFIED DISQUALIFIEDThat That the stewards intend to adhere to the request of the Racing Commission to stamp out rough riding was made manifest in the sixth race when Certain was disqualified after finishing first as a result of jockey W W Taylors action in coming across the others sharply on the first turn It gave Cer ¬ tain an advantage and he succeeded in out ¬ staying Prince 1C with Golden Apple the one to have suffered most as a result of the jam landing in third place The stewards immediately after the finish began an investi ¬ gation and after interrogating some of the riders including Taylor and also hearing pa ¬ trol judge Phillips version disqualified Cer ¬ tain and gave the purse to Prince K Golden Apple was moved into second place and Easter Bells was given third
