NEW YORKS GLORIOUS OPENING METROPOLITAN SPRING RACING SEASON BEGINS BEGINSAUSPICIOUSLY AUSPICIOUSLY WITH IMMENSE CROWD PRESENT AT ATJAMAICA JAMAICA TRYSTER CAPTURES PAUMONOK PAUMONOKAFTER AFTER BRILLIANT CONTEST TRUE FLIER FLIERVICTORIOUS VICTORIOUS IN THE SUFFOLK STAKES fBY HARRY M WILLIAMS NEW YORK N Y May 3 Never was there a betterrun Paumonok Handicap than the one that ushered in the 1922 season of racing in New York at Jamaica Wednesday Harry Payne Whitneys Tryster one of the most popular eligibles for the Kentucky Derby of last year was the winner by a scant head from Gifford A Cochrans Smoke Screen with Walter J Salmons Careful George W Lofts On Watch and the West mont Stables Sennings Park following so closely lapped that there was difficulty ex ¬ perienced in fixing the order of the finish Incidentally the threequarters were run in 111 = 3 which establishes a new track record for the distance distanceMorvich Morvich shortly before the race had worked the same distance in 1 12 and it was not surprising that the brilliant field that raced in the stake should hang out the new mark markThe The New York season opened in brilliant fashion and never before has there been a larger or more enthusiastic crowd on hand to welcome the thoroughbred back to the metropolitan courses The grandstand was filled to its capacity while the lawns and the clubhouse attracted a tremendous gathering gatheringAfter After all the scratches were made from the Paumonok there were eight left to go and they raced in midseason style The start was a good one though Smoke Screen propped slightly as the barrier rose and was away sluggishly while On Watch also began slowly slowlyUSE USE CAREFULS GREAT SPEED SPEEDAudacious Audacious dashed to the front at the start and Little Chief from the Rancocas Stable going a bit wide was in third place Tryster was next to the rail and running fourth with Sennings Park the one to race outside next in order Butwell made every use of Care fuls speed and she soon had Audacious headed while little E Kummer who had the mount on Mrs Viaus old sprinter did not appear strong enongh to give the big fellow the ride that was required Tryster was holding his place next to the rail and Pen ¬ man was keeping him well within striking distance of the leaders Both Smoke Screen and On Watch were making up ground on the inside but both seemed so far back that they did not appear to have much of a chance chanceGoing Going to the stretch turn Lyke made a de ¬ termined challenge with Sennings Park He was saved on the outside of Careful and as he did the Salmon filly bore out badly carry ¬ ing him with her This afforded Tryster his opportunity and Penman brought him through on the inside until he was closely lapped on the flying leaders Careful con ¬ tinued to bear out and carry Sennings Park with her in the run through the stretch while Smoke Screen and On Watch followed Trys ¬ ter through on the inside insideSMOKE SMOKE SCREEN THERE AT FINISH FINISHCareful Careful was fighting it out in resolute fashion but the ground she had lost was too much of a handicap She was holding Sen ¬ nings Park safe without being able to shake him off but the others on the inside were charging along in a way that made it any ¬ bodys race right to the last stride On Watch had been blocked slightly as he made his run along on the inside but Smoke Screen found room even inside of Tryster and at the end he was giving the son of Peter Pan a stiff argument to beat him a short head headJust Just which one of the other three finished third was in doubt until the numbers were displayed Then it was seen that Careful even after having lost so much ground in the stretch had lasted to beat both On Watch and Sennings Park the oilier two finishing in the order named namedIt It was a horse race from the first stride to the last and while there were many of the opinion that with better fortune at the start Smoke Screen would have been the winner his misfortune enabled him to save the ground in the stretch that saw him battling it out with the Whitney colt at the end endThe The race was far and away the best re ¬ newal of the Paumonok that had its first running in 190G 190GTrue True Flier one of the juvenile sensations of the Havana meeting was the winner of the Suffolk Selling Stakes the first twoyear old race of the New York spring season She had a decided advantage in the matter of condition and it is probable that before the racing year is old she will be beaten by some of those that finished behind her today todayOakwood Oakwood from the Nevada Stock Farm Continued oil Stable had the best of a start that was a bit ragged and Parke made every use of that ad ¬ vantage when he raced out with the son of Honeywood Richard T Wilsons Kirk Lady was not far away and True Flier was also a sufferer at the start The others were in rather a strungout order by reason of the green actions of several of the starters while Margaret Loretta from the stable of J A Coburn was virtually left at the post postMarinelll Marinelll who had the mount on True Flier rode a wonderfully confident race and he really made no serious move with the daughter of Pennant and Ruth Law until nearing the stretch turn There he moved up slightly and when Oakwood held on to the lead he shook the Havana filly up sharp ¬ ly At the furlong post he had to go to a mild drive to make the victory certain but at the end True Flier came away with plenty to spare Oakwood stuck it out to save second place readily from Kirk Lady and there were no others in the race that cut a figure at any time in the running runningGeorge George Odom had the honor of sending the first winner of the metropolitan season to the post when he saddled Robert L Gerrys Bees Wax a fleet daughter of Celt and Honeybee It was a five and a half furlong dash for threeyearolds and an even dozen good ones sported silks Montfort Jones St Henry was the one to finish in second place and third money was apportioned to Gifford Cochrans June Grass Little time was lost at the barrier and Mars Cassidy had the field away in good alignment Buxton got Shaffer away fast and he was the first to show out of the bunch but Bees Wax was right after him and at the halfmile ground had him headed to lead for the rest of the journey At the end she was still racing fast and plainly had something left Sande saved ground with St Henry at the stretch turn but the colt tired palpably through the last eighth when he appeared to have a chance to catch the winner winnerST ST HENRYS RACE DISAPPOINTING DISAPPOINTINGAfter After the race Galantman after finishing fourth was worked out another eighth as was St Henry June Grass and Stone Jug The performance of St Henry was hardly an impressive one for he was not running at the end as a Derby or Preakness eligible should run runThere There was a mishap during the running of the second race when Mrs Paul Fox Molly Barnes was bumped and fell in the back stretch Fortunately M Slaughter who had the mount escaped serious injury The fin ¬ ish was one of the best of the day when J Byers Round Robin under a vigorous ride by Fator was just up to beat the Oak Ridge Stables Sea Mint Sea Mint was the one to set the pace and Fairbrotlier sent him into a good lead before the stretch was reached Fator had worked his way up gradually with Round Robin and he made his rush through the final eighth Camouflage landed in third place Commissioner Eishmann carrying the colors of W L Oliver after racing promi ¬ nently to the stretch tired when the real test came and evidently needed the race raceThe The Rancocas Stable promises to cut a figure in the early twoyearold racing If Hildreth has any more like Whirlwind and Aladdin the pair that he raced in the dash at the end of the program They shape up as clearly the best juveniles that have yet been uncovered Whirlwind was the winner while Aladdin only ran fifth but he showed enough in the running to warrant the pre ¬ diction that when he is a little more pro ¬ ficient in his racing lessons he will be right up in the first flight of the best of them themWHIRLWIND WHIRLWIND A CRACKERJACK CRACKERJACKSande Sande had Whirlwind away in front and he never surrendered that position keeping his mount under a slight restraint Blanc Seing raced up to him at the stretch turn but Whirlwind had so much left that when Sande shook him up he came away without an effort and at the end he was an easy winner by a length General Thatcher from the Nevada Stock Farm raced third and Osage bearing the silks of J S Cosden was fourth fourthAladdin Aladdin left the barrier in a forward posi ¬ tion but he raced so green that he at once dropped far out of the running Then Fator took him extremely wide all the way and while fifth was his position at the end he had closed a big gap and had demonstrated that he is a colt of abundant speed The winner is a handsome chestnut son of Ulti ¬ mus and Sarnia that Hildreth bought at the twelfth pae NEW YORKS FINE OPENING Continued from first page Saratoga yearling sales last August from P T Chinn for J4500 J4500The The one
