OPJGIN OP THE TURF SWEEP At the conference of the Methodist Church of Victoria and Tasmania In Melbourne Aus ¬ tralia last month a Tasmanian delegate W E Shoobridge administered a knockout blow to most of tho other delegates by stating that the Methodist Church was the father of Tattersalls sweep organization a lottery over horses of wide Australian range rangeIn In the Melbourne Ages report of the pro ¬ ceedings it is stated that during the dis ¬ cussion on tho subject of gambling Mr W B Shoobridge said Tattersalls competitions were originally established as a land lottery in Tasmania by thp old Van Dlemans Land Bank with which a leading Methodist was at the time associated associatedOur Our own church declared Mr Shoo ¬ bridge is responsible for Tattersalls The chairman Rev J Snell protested by saying I dont think this Is an absolute fact Mr Shoobridge should be careful in his phrasing Be says this organization owes its origin to a leading member of tho Methodist Church I challenge his statement statementMr Mr Shoobridge replied I am certain of my statements
