BELMOKTS LARGEST CROWD Memorial Day Attendance Breaks AH Previous Records Rocket Captures the Toboggan J E Madden s McKee First Firstin in Rich Juvenile Stakes NEW YORK N Y May SO All attend ¬ ance records were broken for the holiday racing at Belmont Park today and with the perfect weather and a fast track the sport was worthy of the Memorial day gathering It was a card that was full of interest with the Toboggan the Juvenile and a steeplechase as features and each race brought out a real good contest contestThe The Toboggan furnished a real thrill when H P Whitneys threeyearold Rocket forced all the pace to win while S C Hildreths Dunboync just nosed out Tryster another Whitney starter for second place The Juvenile was captured by John E Maddens McKee while Cherry Pie and Canaque both from the Greentree Stable finished second and third thirdThere There was some delay at the start of the Toboggan for which On Watch was to blame but the start was a good one Rocket was away quickly and Penman at once rushed him out until he was clear of his opponents and he was good enough to hold his advantage with Reprisal in second place and the otheis closely bunched back of him Dunboync was racing along next to the inner rail and within striking distance but in decidedly close quarters while Tryster was racing wide and losing some ground Careful was en the inside and she was an ¬ other that was in rather close quarters quartersSwinging Swinging into the stretch Rocket was still well clear but the others were charging along so threateningly that Penman struck him once with the whip at the eighth post The son of Broomstick responded to the call and coming on straight and true was win ¬ ner by a length and a half halfDUNIJOYJTE DUNIJOYJTE IJT DIFFICULTIES DIFFICULTIESDunboync Dunboync was repeatedly blocked in his position on the inside but fighting his way through just took second place in the last stride Tryster had been forced to race wide and finished with rare courage On Watch after being outrun early and badly buffeted about in the early running came with his usual rush at the end to land in fourth place The race was worth 7500 to the winner and for the first time in its Belmont Park history was around the turns It was a change of course that was decidedly popular with the crowd crowdThirteen Thirteen went to the post for the five eighths of the Juvenile and John E Madden furnished the winner in McKee a bay son of 1 Ultimus and Ballymena while Cherry Pie and Canaque both from the Greentree Stable 1 finished second and third The race was worth 13200 to the winner The start was a good one for all but Chester Applegates Roseate II He was caught in the barrier as he left and carried it with him almost to the finish finishMcKee McKee began well from the Inside and com ¬ ing over slightly in the early stages forced all the pace Canaque starting from the in ¬ side was right with the Madden colt while 1 Lyke was not so lucky with Cherry Pie the Greentree Stable starter starterETTNS ETTNS STBAIGHT AJfD TRUE TRUEGoing Going by the stand Pennon showed signs of weakening and Cherry Pie was finishing fast while Canaque was holding safe the Schwartz colt McKee ran straight and true to the end where he was winner by a length and a half and Cherry Pie beat his stable mate by a couple of lengths for second place The time 57 is a record for the Juvenile since it has been run over the fiveeighths at Belmont Park ParkIt It was a real good contest that came out of the running of the short course steeplechase when Mohican from the Greentree Stable outgamed Joseph E Wideners Wisest Fool to win rather easily and L J Raymonds New Haven was a distant third Smithfield made a mistake at the last jump and un ¬ seated R Simpson and this permitted New Haven to take down a part of the purse The only other starter was Bronze Eagle and he was a distant last all the way wayMohican Mohican was easily best and went out from tho start to force the pace all the way New Haven went with him for the first three Jumps while Byers had Wisest Fool under double restraint and galloping along in third place Before tho water was reached New Haven was all through and then Byers made his move with the Widener jumper Ho went to Mohican readily but when Bethel shook up Mohican and Byers realized that his mount could not outrun him he eased up Continued oa tenth pace BELMONTS LARGEST CROWD Continued from first page to make his attempt later In the back field Byers moved up again with Wisest Fool and he and Mohican drew out Into a long lead leadIn In tho meantime Smithfield had easily found his way Into third place and had no contest for that part of the purse until he made the mistake that unshipped Simpson When he was caught later it was found he had gone dead lame in tho running runningThis This raco marked the first winning ride for W BetheL He has all tho qualifications that go to make a good crosscountry rider and will doubtless be heard from frequently during the jumping season seasonCrochet Crochet from the stable of J S Cosden was an easy winner of the opening four and a half furlongs dash through the straight It was for maiden twoyearold fillies and the result was never seriously in doubt Sister Sue from the Syndicate Stable was the one to finish second and John E Maddens The Kiss was a close third thirdCrochet Crochet and The Kiss raced along together through the early stages leading the others but before the stand was reached Crochet drew away and at the end was seven lengths clear Sister Sue finished with good speed and gamely and was up In the last stride to take second from the tiring The Kiss On the way to the post The Kiss appeared a trifle sore and she did not race up to what was expected of her herThe The mile and a sixteenth that was the fifth offering brought out an even half dozen and the winner turned up in R J Murphys good filly Thimble H Altermans Tufter finished second and W R Coos David Har um beat Billy Watts for the short end of the purse purseThimble Thimble Tufter and Tangerine were the ones to force the early running until Tan ¬ gerine was cut off and crowded back badly Then Thimble went on and raced Tufter into defeat and never afterward surrendered the lead leadTufter Tufter had no excuse but David Harum had a decidedly rough passage when Fair brother after trying to come through on the inside was forced to go out to find room and then again in the stretch Billy Watts lost considerable ground going wide in the stretch and tired in the final drive driveCharles Charles F Hill of the Thoroughbred Sales Company has returned from the Woodbine track at Toronto where he conducted a sale of J 1C L Ross horses He said the sale was successful and he was enthusiastic over the racing at Woodbine WoodbineMrs Mrs H Duryea is arranging for the ship ¬ ment of her good stallion Sweeper IL to this country countryAn An English jumper that shows real quality is being schooled for Al Davis in Ards on the other side Unfortunately he was not en ¬ tered in the crosscountry races that have been closed though he has shown a quality in his schooling that would suggest his eligi ¬ bility to go along with the best of them themThere There was a slight fire at the Aqueduct track Tuesday morning The blaze was suf ¬ ficient to make necessary the calling out of the fire department but no serious damage was done doneIt It being a holiday the post time was set back to 2 30 to enable the immense crowd to be on hand for the running of the first race It was a crowd that no other course but the big Nassau County one could possibly accommodate
