IN EQUINE HALL CF FAME Captain AJcock joins Select List of Suburban Winners Scores Notable Triumph in the theFamous Famous Race Cresta First Firstin in Fashion Stakes NEW YORK N Y June 3 Captain Al cock from the Quincy Stable added his naino to the winning roster of the Suburban Han ¬ dicap at Belmont Park today when he scored impressively from Max Hirschs Flying Cloud another lightweight of the five start ¬ ers while the Rancocas Stables Mad Hatter the top weight of the company was third Mrs Louise Viaus Georgie an added starter was fourth and the Westmont Stables Sen nings Park was a distant last lastThe The Suburban was the outstanding fea ¬ ture of a holiday card at Belmont Park an l the other offerings of importance were the Fashion and a steeplechase that brought about an excellent contest contestIt It was a miserable day for racing with a cold disagreeable wind blowing across tha course and the track was muddy But this did not prevent an immense throng from being on hand and considering the unpro pitious conditions it was an excellent day of sport sportThe The Suburban field lost no time leaving the barrier and when Mad Hatter started from the inside he promptly pinned his ears and Sande had to pull him off the rail before he would settle and run in a racing stride He just will not extend himself next to the inside rail railWhile While Mad Hatter refused to go on from the inside position Sennings Park and Georgie raced out together and were soon clear Captain Alcock brought up the rear As soon as Mad Hatter vas pulled off the rail he settled into his stride and when Sande kept him well out he was soon close after Georgio and Sennings Park Then Kummer eased Georgie back slightly and Sennings Park was left to set the pace alone aloneMAD MAD HATTER SULKS BADLY BADLYSande Sande made no move with Mad Hatter until rounding out of the backstretch There he shook up the son of Fair Play and he circled around and before the stretch was reached he had taken the lead and opened daylight on his opponents Sennings Park was through and was dropping back white Georgie vas beginning to shorten strides but both Flying Cloud and Captain Alcock were galloping fast On the stretch turn Mad Hatter swung wide and as he did so Flying Cloud for an instant loomed up as the winner as Marinelli sent him up on the in ¬ side Ileadeel for home Mad Hatter again pinned his ears when called on and he sulked all through the stretch In the meantime Flying Cloud had gone to the front but Cap ¬ tain Alcock was giving him a stern chase and stride by stride was closing in on tha Ilirsch colt coltIt It was a pretty fight that thrilled tha crowd untH right in the closing stride Flying Cloud faltered and Captain Alcock was win ¬ ner by a length Flying Cloud beat the sulk ¬ ing Mad Hatter three lengths for second plftce and as a matter of fact the Rancocaa Stable horse was running so sourly that ha only beat Georgie a head for third thirdThe The race was worth 8200 to the Quincy Stable Captain Alcock had a decided pull in the weights with 103 to the 130 that was carried by Mad Hatter while Flying Cloud vas in under the feather of 102 pounds The mile and a quarter was run in 2 05 making it a good race for the track conditions conditionsAs As a supplementary attraction for Subur ¬ ban day the Westchester Racing Association provided the Fashion Stakes for twoyear olds Today was its twentyfourth running and a field eleven and much quality strove for the 5725 that wenc to the winner winnerCROCHET CROCHET A FAILURE FAILUREThe The public could see nothing but Crochet in thin raco The Cosden filly made such a lasting impression last Tuesday when she won a four and a half furlong dash by seven lengths in 51 equaling the track record that the majority of the spectators were satisfied that she would easily repeat today How ¬ ever such is not the story of the Fashion Stakes Here it is Instead of the silks of J S Cosden flashing first past the judges it was those of H P Whitney and it vas the daughter of Whisk Broom II the unconsidered Cresta which in a whirlwind finish carried them to an un ¬ expected but nevertheless brilliant victory Cresta under Penmans vigorous riding caught and passed the pacemaker Equinoc ¬ tial in the last few strides and drew clear right at the end Equinoctial ran a splendid race setting a good pace in the goingand only tiring in the last eighth Solisa was Continued on twelfth piffcj IN EQUINE HALL OF FAIfl Continued from rirst page I third after a meritorious performance closing a biff gap from a slow beginning j The changed track conditions were the un ¬ doing of the favorite as Crochet seemed to bo handicapped and not able to stride freely Sho vaa never prominent and when Kummer saw that die was thoroughly beaten he eased her up at the end It was a really good contest that came out of tho Good and Plenty Steeplechase over the short course and William Garth showed a real good jumper in Ilallavill when he was winner from Joseph E Wideners Sea Skipper while Garth also saddled the horse to finish third in Royal Arch racing for Ral Parr j jHallavill Hallavill performed under the silks of J j S Cosden There were seven starters and no accident marred the running IlallaviUs performance was decidedly impressive for j the reason that he practically forced all the pace and then outgamed the older jumper when the pinch camo at the end The Vir ¬ ginian was first to go out with Hallavill while Dyers had Sea Skipper under restraint in the early stages The others were fairly well strung out with Phoenix bringing up the rear j At the water the first time Byers had per mittcd Sea Skipper to move into second place while Ilallavill still showed the way Then at the lower end of the field the Widener jumper joined the Cosden jumper and tried to outrun him but Hallavill still had plenty left and he went right along with Sea Skip per For three jumps they were lapped and in the meantime Royal Arch had moved into third place but was still lengths away from the first two Phoenix was moving up from j his rear position while Soumangha the old maro that was racing for tho Grcentree Stable had dropped back until she was last At the upper end of the field it seemed cer J tain that Sea Skipper would be the winner He had a slight advantage over Hallavill 1 and Byers was saving ground with him and riding a perfect race But Ilallavill was not through by any means and when Williams lound that Royal Arch could not be de ponded upon to save the day for the Garth clan he sat down to ride the fouryearold fouryearoldi i vigorously The son of Berrilldon responded respondedI I to the call so cheerfully that Byers was soon forced to a drive on Sea Skipper Both horses horsesI I rose for the last jump at the same time but Ilallavill was first over and from there to j the end ho readily outgamed Sea Skipper Skipperi i to win going away awayMaidens Maidens of the selling plater variety went to the pest in the opening mile and as is always the case in such races the field abounded in paddock tips Cloncannon from the stable of Humbert Rigcone proved rather an easy winner with J J OTooles Algoa second and W II Fixers Buxom third thirdi i Walter J Salmons Jocose was the one to set the pace and Butwell sent him out to a good lead Cloncannon and Jug closely lapped chased along in second place and before long the others were fairly well strung out Swinging out of tho backstrctch both Jug and Cloncannon moved up on Jocose but the Salmon colt was still well to the good and it was not until nearing the stretch turn that he collapsed When he did ho made a good job of it Cloncannon rushed to the front there but Jug was through and he began to drop back while Algoa was closing fast and racing through the field At the end Cloncannon still had something left to win by plenty of daylight and Algoa out finished Buxom while tho others were strung out and lengths farther away awayAnother Another brood mare performed through the field when Soumangha raced for the Green tree Stable The daughter of Don de Oro and Sunrise is the mother of two colts I IBefore Before the races S C Hildreth indulged the twoyearolds Whirlwind Aladdin and Chile in a good halfmile work through the straight course j jJohn John Madigin president of the Niagara Racing Association at Fort Erie was a
