BANNER DAY OF THE E4ST Wonderful Racing Program Ar ¬ ranged for Saturday June 10 Belmont Stakes of 50000 Out ¬ standing Feature of All Star Attractions BY C J FITZ GERALD NEW YORK N Y Juno 3 With Snob II and other good threeyearolds starting in the 50000 Belmont Stakes Morvich working a fast mile under colors the best of the twoyearolds contesting the Keene Memorial and crack gentleman riders talc ¬ ing part in the Amateur Cup the West Chester Racing Association promises a treat to its patrons on Saturday next June 10 It will be the last Saturday of what has been a satisfactory meeting despite the ab ¬ sence from the track of several good horses through sickness and the accidents inci ¬ dental to training trainingWhile While Snob II won the Withers in a man ¬ ner to justify Mr Cosden s acquiring him for 85000 the colt has yet to show that he possesses stamina as well as speed Many winners of the Withers have failed to stay when asked to run the extra threeeighth of the Belmont course The admirers of Snob II think he can run as far as horses are asked to go these days and are hoping for a strong field on Saturday so that they can prove the soundness or their judgment The Withers and Belmont Stakes have been likened to the Two Thousand Guineas and the Epsom Derby of the English turf both of which have been decided this year with St Louis by Louvois winner of the former and Capt Cuttle by Hurry On the hero of the longer and more important classic The manner in which St Louis beat his opponents in the Guineas led to his being made favorite for the Derby yet when it came to staying the longer route he was found wanting in stamina and history will not accord him as high a place as the colt which carried the Irish rider Donoghue to his fourth Derby triumph triumphBELIEVE BELIEVE HE CATf STAY STAYThe The public has no line on the capabilities of Snob II beyond a mile but the manner in which he finished in tha Withers would warrant the belief that he can stay like his sire Prestige which had an unbeaten record in France and got Sardanapale reckoned the best horse seen on the Continent in a generation On the dams side the Cosden champion has some stout blood though Isi dor the sire of May Dora and which was by Amphion from Isis by Bend Or was nothing more than a sprinter his best dis ¬ tance being seveneighths Isidors grand dam however was the great mare Shotover a winner of the Derby and other classics in competition with the colts Snobs grand dam on the distaff side was Mai by Meddler from Springtide by Galliard She was a sister to the fine mare Colonial Girl which could stay right well wellStayers Stayers have a way of coming from sprint ¬ ing families at times and in none more so than that of Amphion which sired the sprinter Sundridge which in turn gave the turf the Derby winner Sunstar whose get stays quite well wellThe The fact that great horses come from un ¬ expected sources furnishes one of the fas ¬ cinations of the turf Morvich himself is a notable illustration of it His sire Runny mede which was from a Domino mare a line more noted for speed than stamina was a miler and he in turn was by Voter a smasher at all distances up to a mile The ability of Morvich to stay cannot be placed entirely at the door of his dam Hymir by Solitaire as she was nothing extra as a performer It probably comes from a re ¬ mote ancestor though Voter has to his credit four fairly long distance horses in Ballot The Manager Electioneer and Hilarious The answer to the question may be found in the fact that Mavourneen dam of Voter was by the good longdistanec horse Bar caldinc caldincTRAINEE TRAINEE BURLEtTS DEFI DEFITrainer Trainer Burlews defi issued on behalf of Morvich to race Exterminator or any of the other old horses a mile and a quarter at Belmont Park in the Autumn is proof that the champion has shown him something in the nature of a longdistance trial Such a race will be something to look forward to as it had been announced that the colt would be reserved for threeyearold racing exclu ¬ sively A sweepstakes which would let in Snob II Olympus Bunting and other good threeyearolds as well as Mad Hatter Sennings Park and other fine handicap ma Continued on tenth pace SANNEE DAY OF THE EAST Continued from first page terial would bring about an ideal attrac ¬ tion tionThat That Morvich will not dodge any horse is a fine thing for the turf Mr Block and trainer Burlew are displaying the proper sporting spirit Their gallant champion is entitled to Ids chance in the open The test of racing is Tiot conclusive in that year which does not bring the best of the horses from threeyearolds to aged together in a real searching contest contestThat That Morvich will furnish the public with a fine exhibition of speed on Saturday next is certain Fred Burlew remarked yesterday I am not prepared to say just how fast he will go but it will be a sharp mile and well worth seeing Morvich is a peculiar horse in Jiis work Some parts of a trial he will run freely while in others he is Inclined to loaf He is one of the land that does nothing more than you want him to toThat That Tilorvich was not promising enough as a yearling to warrant his breeder naming him for the Belmont Stakes is in the nature of a calamity His prestige would be increased immensely if he could win such races as the Withers Belmont Dwyer Travers and Real ¬ isation His is a modern case of the ugly duckling which turned out to be a swan The failure of Mr Sprockets to name the colt for such threeyearold fixtures should be a salutary lesson to breeders everywhere These great future events without which the turf would be largely commercial should be well patronized for they arc the very life of racing Stakes which have a continuity are the bulwark Of the breeding industry industryThe The value of such honors to a sire is becoming more evident daily Nobody wants to breed to a horse that hasnt done some ¬ thing worth while in a racing way The Belmont Stakes while an eighth shorter than the Epsom Derby furnishes a convincing test for our threeyearolds If a horse can win the Withers and Belmont his fame is secure while a victory for these events and the Realisation hi the Autumn corresponds to the British Triple Crown which includes the Two Thousand Guineas Derby and St Leger LegerIn In all the years that these great English races have been run only ten horses have accomplished the feat of acchieving the Triple Crown These were Flying Dutch ¬ man Gladiateur Lord Lyon Isinglass Or ¬ monde Common Galtee More Flying Fox Diamond Jubilee and Rock Sand The blood of these horses has had a quickening influ ¬ ence wherever it has been found foundThe The Belmont Park meeting will close on Thursday June 15 when the crack three yearold fillies of the year will be seen in the Coaching Club American Oaks at one mile and threeeighths Then on to Aqueduct with its Brooklyn Handicap Dwyer Stakes and other attractive features
