TO WELL IS A BIG SURPRISE Defeat of Baby Grand in Ottawa OttawaFeature Feature Entirely Unexpected Record Attendance OTTAWA Ont June 3 The Chateau Laurier Handicap which featured the card at Connaught Park resulted in a big sur ¬ prise vhen A V Thomas Yowell was re ¬ turned the winner in a drive from J K L Ross Baby Grand while Parisian Diamond was third The race which was at mile and a sixteenth for threeyearolds and over brought out a field of four there being as nany scratches The start was a good one and Baby Grand and Nomis were the ones to establish the earJy pace while Parisian Diamond was racing in third position with Yowell bringing up the rear Rounding the far turn Nomis began to tire and Turner assumed the lead with the Ross starter Yowell in the meantime had gradually im ¬ proved his position and entering the stretch moved up in a menacing manner Turner roused Baby Grand sharply and he respond ¬ ed courageously The son of Granite began to tire badly under the weight and could not withstand the rush of the fast closing Yowell YowellTodays Todays races were contested over a track that had been severely drenched by a nights rain and was in a slow and cuppy condition Drizzling rain which prevailed throughout the morning gave way to clear skies previous to the running of the open ¬ ing dash and resulted in the largest crowd of the meeting being on hand to witness the afternoons program The crowd estab ¬ lished a record for the Ottawa course and was one of the most fashionable gatherings assembled at a sporting eent in Canada in some time timeAmong Among those seen on the lawns were Dr Behind minister of health Dr Tolmie min ¬ ister of agriculture Dr Rutherford Hon A 1C McLean Commander J K L Ross and a party of friends Hon IT J Sinclair W H Thompson and a group of members of the United Farmers party from the house of commons and others othersDespite Despite the soft going the public had a good line on the merits of the different per ¬ formers and shortpriced winners were in the ascendency Racing on the whole was spirit ¬ ed and interesting and several of the winners earned brackets only after hard stretch drives drivesSTEEPLECHASE STEEPLECHASE TO BUTCHER BOY BOYThe The steeplechase resulted in an easy vic ¬ tory for C 1C Harrisons Butcher Boy which had a safe margin from McCorburn with Algardi third The winner was ridden by S Yeitch and came from behind at the sixth jump and from there on dominated the run ¬ ning McCorburn which was second finished the course with one of jockey Ranschs feet out of the stirrup irons ironsTrainer Trainer George Walker of the Brookdale Stable reported this morning that all of the twoyearolds had been taken down with coughing and would be absent from the races for some time timeS S L Jenkins president of the Maryland State Fair at Laurel Md was a visitor this afternoon afternoonJoseph Joseph McLennan announced this morning the next meeting of the Canadian Racing Associations will be held at Blue Bonnets on Monday June 12 12Louis Louis Angevine secretary of the Montreal Jockey Club came over from Montreal this afternoon to complete final arrangements for the opening at Blue Bonnets The following stables are already quartered on the grounds J 1C L Ross Paul Powers Warner Bros M J Seifert J J McCafferty R B Strass burger W A Buck G P Sherman D Shaw C C Shimson C N Freeman T Doyle M E Thompson W Freeman W E Martin W Newman E Trueman J C Mays C W Hall If Giddings F A Clark G W Fore ¬ man and A C Poretto PorettoM M M Mahoney who was in charge of the mutuel department at Blue Bonnets con ¬ ferred with Mr Angevine regarding final minute details detailsBen Ben Holmes was notified by wire this aft ¬ ernoon that OUT Dad had been shipped from Belmont Park to Blue Bonnets to be raced over the Canadian circuit circuitICimball ICimball Patterson with thirteen horses the property of J W Bean and B Harding ar ¬ rived at Blue Bonnets this morning and will race through both meetings at Montreal
