EXHIBITION OF GAMENESS W J Salmons Crack Filly Care ¬ ful in Meritorious Performance Carries 126 Pounds Overcomes OvercomesMuch Much Interference and Defeats Defeatsthe the Speedy Pen Hose NEW YORK N Y June 8 Walter J Salmons Careful ran one of her best races at Belmont Park today when after having considerably the worst of it at the start she was winner of the Beldame Handicap at threequarters of a mile It was only an overnight handicap but the daughter of Wrack and Mindful took up 126 pounds and gave an exhibition of real gameness when under a long drive after overcoming consid ¬ erable interference she wore down as good a mare as Pen Rose to win going away awayThis This was a race for fillies and mares and was easily the feature of tiie racing on the flat this afternoon The Meadowbrook Stee ¬ plechase was the stake of the day and liko the Beldame it brought about a most inter ¬ esting contest when the Greentrea Stables Kingdqm II a winner on the other side of the Atlantic was the victor victorThere There was some delay at the post in the Beldame owing to the unruly actions of some of the starters and when the barrier rose J S Cosdens Lady Baltimore was off first while Careful was in a bit of a tangle and was slow to be under way wayLang Lang made every use of tlie advantage he had at the start with Lady Baltimore and he sent her away into a good lead Fator soon had Pen Rose in second place while Arrow of Gold next to the inner rail was a good third Butwell was forced to go to the outside with Careful to find racing room and this was another handicap over such a distance distanceGOES GOES TVTDE IIT STRETCH STRETCHSwinging Swinging for home Lady Baltimore was beginning to tire from the early exertion and Arrow of Gold was all through and drop ¬ ping back Butwell was circling around with Careful but to add to her handicap it had been necessary to come wide into the stretch stretchPen Pen Rose after a short battle went on by Lady Baltimore and Careful was still a couple of lengths back of her with Butwell driving to the limit limitPen Pen Rose is not the quitting kind and it was a hard chase but the daughter of Wrack came along straight and true and under punishment at the end she was winner by a length from Pen Rose while the Triple Springs mare beat Lady Baltimore a length and a half for second place placeJ J L Hollands Rork a twoyearold that learned his racing lessons in New Orleans was winner of the opening four and a half furlong dash when under an excellent ride by A Johnson he outgamed H C Fishers Adventure and J S Cosdens Duster Rork and Adventuress dominated all the running and an eighth from the finish the Fisher filly had a slight advantage over the Hol ¬ land gelding and seemed to be going in bet ¬ ter style At the same time Duster was coming along with a great burst of speed on the outside but right at the end Johnson outrode Kelsay and kept Rork going long enough to win by a nose while Adventuress just beat Duster by a head headSTEEPLECHASE STEEPLECHASE TO KINGDOM II IIThe The Meadowbrook Steeplechase Handicap resulted in a corking good race through the field when Vincent Powers rode the Green tree Stables foreign fencer Kingdom II to a wellearned victory from Phoenix from the stable of Joseph E Davis with J S Cosdons Bullseye a close third It was the first race of the season at two and a half miles and was worth 2425 to the winner Eight went to the post and they all finished without mishap with old Robert Oliver bringing up the rear rearGreat Great Nan the twoyearold of the Riviera Stable which is generally rated as one of the best juveniles of the year was out on the track at Jamaica again for the first time since sickness sent him into retirement retirementMarshall Marshall Cassidy has been busily engaged schooling twoyearolds at the Aqueduct track The sickness among the young horses has made many of them backward in their racing lessons lessonsThe The injury suffered by Irish Brigadier in his last race is more serious than was first thought and there is a doubt now of his being brought back to the races for a considerable time timeWilliam William Shields acting for J L Holland has purchased the Peruvian from Miller Hen ¬ derson dersonThe The Rancocas Stables twoyearolds aro all recovering from the sickness that kept them away from the races and are galloping in a manner that should see tliem in races before the end of the Aqueductpmeeting
