PROVINCIAL TO HOPELESS Carries His New Owners Colors to Victory in Windsor Feature. Double Score for Ross Stable Carmandale In a Great Display of Speed. WINDSOR, Ont., July 15. The running of the Provincial Handicap, which featured the program this afternoon, brought out the best of the two-year-old stables at the course and the event was far from being a truly run one, for Donges, which raced into fourth position, was by far the best and overcame interference which ultimately cost him the victory. The winner turned up in Hopeless, which was acquired by Jefferson Livingston previous to the running of the race from II. P. Headley, with B. Hardings Bucado second and Edward F. Whitneys Heeltaps third, while J. S. Wards Donges and Flag of Truce, from the J. K. L. Ross Stable, finished in the order named. The finish was a thrilling one and the proverbial blanket would have covered the entire field as they passed under the judges. The start found the quintet leaving the barrier in good alignment, with Donges, Hopeless and Heeltaps racing heads apart, whll Bucado was heading Flag of Truce. Donges was racing on the inside while Heeltaps was on the outside with Hopeless in the middle. Before the field had traversed a good quarter of a mile, Donges was crowded against thsi rail and Burke was forced to take up. Hopeless and Heeltaps were racing heads apart while Donges dropped back a brief distance before he again found his stride. In the meantime Claver had got Flag of Truco moving and he had an advantage ovev Bucado. Taylor had now gained the inside rail and every time that Burke essayed to go through with Donges he was blocked ami could not attempt to como to the outside. In the run through the stretch Hopeless held on resolutely and was out to the ex-, treme limit to stand off the fast-closins Bucado. The latter came with a rush that was carrying him two strides to every one o the winner. Heeltaps was on the inside rail and Donges could not get through. JOCKEY TAYLOR SUSPENDED. Tho stewards immediately questioned the riders who were astride the leading horses Rowan, Burke and W. Taylor and after deliberation allowed the result to stand, but suspended Taylor for the remainder of the meeting. Todays rough riding tactics by Taylor was his second repetition of the meeting, ho having been cautioned by the stewards the opening day of the meeting, when he rode Hopeless, which defeated Lathrop. Tho crowd which thronged the Windsor Jockey Club course this afternoon was of record-breaking proportions and packet every available space in the stands and lawns. Tho weather conditions were all that could be desired, while the track was in prime condition. The card which was down for decision was a well-balanced one and was productive of spirited racing. Well-backed horses were successful in the majority of the races. The opening dash of the afternoon resulted in G. Alexandras Carmandale equaling the track record established by Dr. Hickman two years ago when he defeated Clansman, a former stablematc, in an easy manner, while Ultimata was third. Carmandale dominated tho running practically tho entire distance and saved ground throughout, while Clansman was forced to work his way up on the outside of the field. The three-quarters wero run in 1:11. EASY TOR MESSIXES. The J. K. L. Ross colors wore much m evidence during the afternoon, being twice carried to success. Hallucination started the double, while Messines completed it. Hallucination displayed his superiority over the Canadian juveniles and had a safe margin at the end, while Messines never left the mile dash in doubt. Both were ridden by jockey Claver. William Sinek, Exalted Ruler of Chicago B. P. O. E., heading a party of 200 Elks passing through Detroit on a special train from tho annual convention at Atlantic City, were visitors at Windsor this afternoon. Tno Elks were accompanied by a band. J. K. L. Ross Lion dOr was withdrawn from the opening race this afternoon, due to a filling of one of his legs. The Thorncllffe Stables good two-year-old Ocean Crest is laid up with an attack ot sickness and will be on the shelf for soniu time. W. Perkins three-year-old Casey was tho victim of a collision this morning when ho was bumped by J. R. Skinkers Duke John, which got the best of his exercise boy and Continued on twelfth page.
