CLIMAX TO SARATOGA SPORT a 1 RICH HOPEFUL STAKES Fourteen Star Two-Year-QIds After 5,000 Prize. 6 Grey Lag and Exterminator Clash in Famous Saratoga Cup Race. One of the richest races of the year will be run today when the Hopeful Stakes is decided at Saratoga. This valuable two-year-old fixture and the famous Saratoga Gup are the outstanding features of the closing day of the glorious August meeting at Americas most fashionable racing ground. The Hopeful is a fitting climax to a series of two-year-old races at the current meeting which have furnished fine sport and enriched the owners of the successful candidates. Beginning with the Flash Stakes on the opening day and running through such as the United States Hotel, Special, Grab Bag, Grand Union Hotel and Spinaway, the pick of the two-year-olds have been seen in action. That the Hopeful will probably be worth 5,000 this year is an indication of the growth of the turf in popularity, for without the generous support of the public these big stake offerings would not be to the fore. It is at the same time a proof of the fidelity of the Saratoga Association to its avowed policy of giving the horsemen a liberal portion of its surplus after deducting a reasonable return on its investment, and the spending of such sums in the upkeep and betterment of its property as to gain the unstinted praise of all who pass through its gates. The Hopeful closed with 2G8 nominations, and there are on the eve of the race fourteen of these that have survived the stress of training and shown sufficient quality to warrant their being sent to the post. Included are the colts and fillies which have been furnishing such fine contests during the meeting, and there will be a horse race before the winners number is hung up. HOPEFUL STAKES Ilorse. Wt. For the Saratoga Cup it looks as though the starters will be Exterminator, Grey Lag Mad Hatter, Kai-Sang and Bon Homme. An interesting race should be the outcome and Exterminator will have a chance to win the coveted trophy for the fourth time in succession. The fact that he had a walkover for the race last year does not detract from his record, as he was ready and eager to take on all comers. The Cup is one of the races which the present day turf needs so badly to bolstet up the staying powers of the thoroughbreds of the period. It is a contest well forth seeing, and sharing interest with the Hopeful Stakes in a program which has been framed to bring out the best in training in the respective divisions it will play an important part.
