GREAT AUSTRALIAN PRIZES Australian Jockey Clubs Spring Meeting Reaches High Average Total 17,500. SYDNEY, N. S. W., Australia, July 20. Every year the Australian Jockey Club is coming nearer ,000 added money for every race at its spring meeting. For the coming fixture there are only six flat and two jumping races short of that amount in a program of twenty-five races. The total added money is ?217,500, against 06,000 last spring, when, as a result of divisions, twenty-six races were decided. The distance of the Squatters Handicap has been reduced to a mile and a quarter, and it is to be run the first day instead of the second. This is in order to give Metropolitan candidates not quite good, enough to compete in the Spring Stakes an opportunity of a run at a middle distance. Its value has been increased to ,000.. The Kensington Handicap will now be on the second day. As . the value of many suburban handicaps now exceed ?750 to the winner, the Trial Stakes will be for horses that have not won a race of over ,000, The Second Hurdle Race and the Dowling Steeplechase each carry ,000, the distance of the former being two miles and three-eighths. The distance of the Sydney Handicap has been slightly reduced in order to enable the winner to escape a Melbourne Cup penalty. The full program is as follows : First Day.
