L AT ON I A CHAMPIONSHIP STAKES i EIGHT HIGH-CLASS THREE-YEAR-OLDS NAMED TO STRIVE FOR KENTUCKY9 S MOST VALUABLE FALL FIXTURE BUNTING AND LUCKY HOUR LOOM UP AS PROBABLE FAVORITES Kentuckys most valuable fall racing fixture will be decided at Latonia this afternoon when the Latcnia Championship Stakes will be run for the fourth time. Entries for this race closed July 1, 1920, with 323 nominations, of which 207 made second payment at 5 each, and 73 third payment at S50 each, leaving 73 dibbles to start. The Kentucky Jockey Club adds 5,000 to the stakes, which, together with the subscription and starting fees, makes the gross value in excess of 0,000. After deducting second, third and fourth moneys and awards to the nominators of the first four horses, the winners share will be approximately 2,000. While this figure falls short cf the 5,090 won by Mad Hatter in the first running of this stake, it is on a par with the winners share in 1920 and 1921, when Cleopatra and Sporting Blood were successful. For todays decision of this coveted event eight of the best three-year-olds of 1922 that have withstood the rigors of training and hard campaigning are named to contest for ihz glory and rich prize that goes to the winner. While the race may not settle definitely the thres-year-old championship of 1922, it should at least go a long way to clarify the unusual situation prevailing this year. One thing seems certain the big crowd that is sure to be present at "Fair Latcnia" this afternoon will see a real horse race with Bunting and Lucky Hour the hope of the East, while Chatterton and the Montfort Jones entry, Rockminister and Surf Rider, are expected to uphold the honor of the West. Although the great majority of racing followers believe the race will be a duel between Bunting and Lucky Hour, there are a goodly number who expect the sensational Chatterton to furnish the biggest surprise cf the year and add the Latcnia Championship Stakes to the list of his brilliant successes this fall. Buntings large money-winnings are due chiefly to his success in the Futurity of last year. Trainer James Rowe, Sr., is a great admirer of Bunting and makes no secret of his joy at the opportunity of again having the Whitney colt meet Lucky Hour. He feels confident that Bunting will wipe out his former defeat by Lucky Hour and prove conclusively that he is the better of the two colts. Both horses will carry the same weight, 126 pounds, and have capable riders in the saddle. C. Kummer will ride Bunting and Schuttinger will be astride Lucky Hour.
