INCREASE TO 0,000 Hopeful Stakes to Be More Valuable Than Ever in 1923. Entries for That and Other Saratoga Features Close for Entries November 27. NEW YORK, N. Y.. November 6 Breeders and owners of thoroughbreds will find interest in the announcement by president T. of Association Richard -Wilson -the-Saratoga for the Improvement of the Breed of j Horses that the Hopeful Stakes for 1923 will have a guaranteed gross value of 0,-000, thus making it certain that it will hold its place as one Of the most valuable races of the American turf. The gross value of the Hopeful, won by J S Cosdens Dunlin last August, was 4,350. An addition of 0,000, or more, and it is reasonable to expect an equally generous support of the popular race, and perhaps increased patronage, would place the value of the race in "1923 at close to 0,000. The Hopeful has grown in importance steadily. Coming in the wake of those 0,- 000 features the United States and Grand Union Hotel Stakes it furnishes a fitting Climax to a meeting that is unlike any other in this country because of its environment, Saratoga being utterly devoid of metropolitan aspects. HOPEFUL CLOSES NOV. 27. The Hopeful is only one of the stakes features which will close on Monday, Novembe-27, at the office of the association, 70 West Fortieth Street, New York City. Yearling nominations will be due on that date also for the United States Hotel and . Grand "Union Hotel Stakes, each at three-quarters, and with guaranteed values of 1 0,000. I The Spinaway, for fillies exclusively, will have a guaranteed value of ,500, but the 1 nimble-footed daughters of the best studs in - the United States and Canada, whose mares will no doubt be enrolled for this race, will have to run three-quarters mile instead of five and a half furlongs as formerly. This is a step in the right direction, as it will promote stamina and encourage breeders to produce young fillies that can win under the same conditions as the colts. Other races for now yearlings, to be de-cdied at the Spa next August, are the Grab Bag Handicap, of a guaranteed value of ,0.00, an attractive feature over the three-, ; quarters mile route. The Consolation Stakes, with ,500 added, to be run in two divisions, the first at five and a half furlongs and the second at three-quarters mile, is another feature that has found popularity since its introduction. The Saratoga Sales Stakes, - with ,500 added, at five and a half furlongs, concludes the list for juveniles. 5 TR AYE RS AND ALABAMA STAKES. 3 Present-day yearlings must be named for two of the best fixtures for three-year-olds to be decided in 1924. These are the Travers. 2 for entire colts and fillies, and the Alabama 1 Stakes, for fillies exclusively. The. former. - which was established in 1S64, and conse-t quently the oldest feature for three-year-olds 2 run for in the United States, has a guaran-r teed value of 2,500. The Alabama is guaranteed at 0,000. The distance is the samo t in both races, a mile and a quarter, and they j constitute excellent tests of stamina as well as speed. In increasing the value of the Hopeful, the e Saratoga management is keeping faith with "I the breeders of the country, and it is a fore-gone conclusion that the response on their part will be most liberal in character. The T public will benefit in the last analysis in the 1 improved quality of the sport.
