MOST GENEROUS OF TURFMEN An old trainer says: "In all my thirty and odd years experience as a trainer I never knew of an owner or turfman who wa3 more lavish in his treatment of trainers and jockeys than the late August Belmont, Sr., father of the present chairman of the Jockey Club. Well do I remember the day old Race-land won the Suburban for Mr. Belmont. He was so jubilant over the success of his pet thoroughbred that he literally plastered James Rowe, his trainer, and "Snapper" Garrison, his jockey, with presents. Then he crowned the occasion with a big banquet at Delmonicos."
