MORViCH NOW IN THE STUD Full Measure of Greatness Denied Him as Racer May Come in His New Field. "Word from the East la that Morvich has been retired to the stud. The son of Runnymede Hymir was the champion two-year-old of 1921, being undefeated in eleven races and the winner of 15,234, with victories in both the Hopeful and Futurity. Certainly few horses in American turf history were ever accorded the homage and plaudits bestowed on Morvich at the beginning of his three-year-old career. Columns of our daily newspapers were devoted to this horse and his fortunate owner. Then came the Kentucky Derby and his fame was further enhanced. But, alas, there it ended. The Derby was his only victory of the year. He was defeated by Whiskaway twice, once in the Carlton Stakes and again in the Kentucky Special. Surf Rider administered a sound defeat to the colt in a three-quarters dash at Saratoga in August. His last race was the Fall High -"Weight Handicap at Belmont Park, when he finished last in a field of four. In that race Careful scored by four lengths, with a half a length and a head between Prodigious and Exodus, which were the others in the field. Morvichs complete record is as follows: Year. Age. St3. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. Won. 1921 2 11 11 0 0 0 15,234 1922 3 5 1 2 1 1 50.G75 Totals 10 12 2 1 1 05,909 Perhaps the full measure of greatness denied Morvich as a racer may be his in the stud. That remains to be seen. Undoubtedly he will have every opportunity to transmit some of the excellent blood that flows in his veins, as a glance at his pedigree here presented discloses: , Friars -nennit " f . J Balsam....
