KENTUCKY RACING OF 1922 It Is now a long time since the Kentucky racing field failed to show an annual gain in its money product for distribution among owners of winning horses. The climax seemed to be about reached in 1921, but 1922 shows the spirit of progress is still vital in Kentucky lacing. Its total distribution presents the important gain of over 50,000, in comparison with 1921. A part of this increase is accounted for by the first meeting of the Green River Jockey Club at Dade Park, but outside of that new element there is a healthy gain in the matter uppermost in the minds of owners. In fact, in Kentucky, as in the other greater fields of racing, it may well be doubted whether too much money is not now being given. In general such lavish totals arc being distributed that the strictly commercial aspect is being magnified to the obscurement of the nobler appeal of a great sport. Nowadays the commonest selling platers are given purses that would have seemed princely rewards for the best in the days of Luke Blackburn and Hindoo. The time is coming when controllers of the tracks will find it worth while to consider whether a reform in this department is not in order. The heavily-burdened Canadian racing bodies might justly consider that the time for retrenchment lias already arrived so far as they are concerned. By reason of its greater number of racing days Latonia was the leader in output of money, but Churchill Downs excelled in average daily distribution. The essential statistics of thp Kentucky campaign of 1922 are here presented: 2.o S n - B Ob Sb 2.C ga g OS. Track and Meeting H " " " K3 : 5r n S." n and- 5i ? s l? He was the only one whose stable gathered over 00,000 and his total was but little less than his horses won in their entire campaign of 1921. Harry Payne "Whitney was second to him. For a number of years Mr. "Whitney has been constant in his participation in Kentucky racing and has not been without his rewards. This year he was unable to have a starter in the Kentucky Derby, but in the special race so splendidly won by "Whiskaway at Latonia and in Enchantments triumph in the Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs, carried off two of the major prizes of the Kentucky field. Benjamin Blocks third in the owners list Is due the prowess of Morvich alone. That astute trainer "W. Perkins generally contrives to take his full share of the fat in racing and throve so well this year as to make a record for himself in landing fourth. H. H. Hewitts excellent filly Startle proved a disappointment in her three-year-old form. Otherwise he had a full measure of success and finished fifth in the Kentucky field. Mose Goldblatt and the Chicago turfman, Frank J. Kelly, had little to complain of. Jefferson Livingston had a full measure of success, although his costly racer Firebrand, while by no means a failure, hardly came up to expectations. The Lexington newspaper man, Desha Breckinridge, demonstrated with Lady Madcap and Braedalbane, that a small but capable stable is a profitable thing to possess. E. R, Bradleys Idle Hour Stock Farm Stable was in partial eclipse and fell far below its enviable record in 1921. Thirty-seven owners ron 0,000 or more in Kentucky racing this year. A few years back the United States and Canada combined could not show as many. The owners who won 00 or more were: Owner. 1st. 2d. 3d. Amt. Jones, Montfort 44 42 41 10,014 AAhitncv, II. It fell to an undeniably good three- year-old on the day it was run. "Whatever j Morvich became afterwards, there is no denying that he was a superb young race horse on Derby day. Garner was undoubtedly best and does not need to ask odds from any of the riders of the day. But the honors of leadership in races won fell to the lightweight J. Owens, a lad who may be destined to higher honors in the saddle. B. Kennedy rose consistently and skilfully and finished second to young Owens. The ! two Pool brothers came next, W. Pool finishing third and E. Pool fourth. Garner was next J. Heupel did himself credit in the saddle and brought up next to Garner. The veteran D. Connelly, A. Wilson, H. E. Jones, J. Corcoran, considered a coming star by good judges ; L. McDermott, E. Scobie and J. D. Mooney were among the others who put in good work at times.
