DISASTROUS PICKING No Winning Favorite for New Orleans Backers Deceptive Going Brings Downfall of Selections Goaler Runs Unplaced Track Improving NEW ORLEANS La January 5 Todays card was made up of the poorer racers here not a dash other than of the claiming variety being programmed Form as result was all topsy lurvy winners developing from the most unexpected quarters Favorites in most instances ran more disappointingly than on any previous day and figured scantily in results or the running This was probably due to changing track conditions the going next to the inner rail being deep and wet in spots and those traversing this portion of the course being well spent before reaching the stretch stretchAfter After half of the card had been decided jockeys gave the inner strip a wide berth but on occasions they were forced into the trap and it resulted in the defeat of their mounts Other riders offended by taking the short route from choice with dire con ¬ sequences The diminutive Mein was a grave offender in this respect astride Goaler a heavily backed favorite but little else could be expected of this new beginner who means well but is incapable as yet of riding heady races Goaler in addition to being poorly ridden showed soreness before and after the race His performance this afternoon was in contrast to his two preced ¬ ing races which he won easily easilyTROUBLES TROUBLES BEGIN EAELT EAELTThe The racing as a whole was a most difficult problem to the backers and their troubles began early when their chief mainstays in the opener failed to figure at the finish The winner here turned up in William of Coroto man a firsttime starter here He led for the entire race and beat Jacobina home with Locarno landing in third place placeThe The second race came near resulting in a fatality due to the blindness of Ormont He was in the lead when he suddenly began tak ¬ ing a zigzag course interfering sharply with his closest followers and causing them to be ¬ come tangled up Luckily no horse went down and in the general scramble that ensued in the last sixteenth Wireless managed to get clear before the others and reached the finish in advance of Charles J Craigmile and Mildred Ruth Ormont just missed getting third place thereby saving the stewards the bother of disqualifying him Immediately after the finish the officials issued a notice debarring Ormont from further starting here hereElmer Elmer K and Knight of the Heather were backed to the exclusion of the others in the third race but again came disappointment for the backers when Paul Micou racing in suddenly improved form won in easy fashion from Elmer 1C with Sewell Combs just missing second place Knight of the Heather is a bad horse and ran a bad race raceLittle Little Ammie was the victress in the fourth race bringing fillies and mares together Her victory came after she appeared hopelessly beaten but she came with a rush through the stretch and outstayed Encrinite with Kirah in third place Dimples Belgian Queen and Gem were the ones supported here but only Dimples figured prominently she ap ¬ pearing the winner in the stretch but tiring suddenly suddenlyTAN TAN SONS HOLLOW VICTORY VICTORYTan Tan Son having an extensive following won the fifth race in which Goaler was the favored one His victory was a hollow one with Slippery Elm Lampus and Zone dAr mee figuring in a thrilling duel for second place noses separating them at the end endMatinee Matinee Idol acquired yesterday by W D Bernhardt won after a hard drive from Magician in the sixth race Both had con ¬ siderable support supportThe The closing race found Winneconne scor ¬ ing a lucky victory over the improved Gen Cadorna with Mountain Rose II in third place The latter ran as if best and after being practically left at the post closed an immense gap to finish fastest of all allJockey Jockey Lang was the first to draw starter William Snyders ire and was fined 23 for bisbehavior at the post in the sixth race raceBanker Banker Brown has been purchased private ¬ ly by S N Uolman from E R Bradley BradleyJoe Joe Murphy wellknown eastern operator was among todays arrivals for an Indefinite stay stayG G W Forman whose ten horses are quar ¬ tered at Pimlico for the winter was among todays arrivals He is here in quest of ad ¬ ditional racing material materialThere There were fiftythree books on and they will also be on tomorrow tomorrowTodays Todays attendance was large considering the poor racing offering
