LION DOR SPEED WONDER Proves Too Fast for Opponents in Handicap at Tijuana I English Mare Carabosse Makes Fine Impres ¬ sion Though Beaten in First Appearance at Border Course Stakes Fill Well SAN DIEGO Cal January 5 To have caught Lion dOr in Thursdays handicap at threequarters would have called for a dis ¬ play of speed rarely seen on a winter track This gallant sprinter from the stable of Commander J K L Ross was at his best and there are not many horses in the coun ¬ try that can run faster than Lion dOr at a short distance distanceBeginning Beginning quickly and seeming to hit his full stride without the loss of a moment Lion dOr immediately dashed to the front and went at his task without any concern about any of the others Lucky Button es sayed to give him a battle but the Ross run ner soon left the filly in his wake and opened up a big lead At the stretch turn Abadane moved up and made a valiant bid to catch the pacemaker but with jockey Claver admiring the scenery Lion dOr won by half a length Lucky Button was easily third best The race was run in l12 l12s s the quarter in 23fc threeeighths in 34 and the half in 46 Had it been necessary Lion dOr could have bettered the time even though he carried 123 pounds and conceded from seven to thirtyeight pounds to his op ¬ ponents Truth to tell jockey Claver had him under restraint throughout the final eighth eighthJUDGE JUDGE TUTOR RUNS FAST FASTJudge Judge Pryor appearing under the silks of Colonel R L Baker with jockey W Pool in the saddle won as a raal good thing does in the secondary feature a dash at five and a half furlongs Judge Pryor went right to the front and was cantering through the stretch to win off by himself Fireplace just saved second money from Messines from the Ross string This was also a fast race the time being 1 OG The race marked the first appearance of the imported English mare Carabosse which came here heralded as the queen of the Northwest Her race was a sparkling one for she finished a bang up fourth Had she not been in close quar ¬ ters in the final sixteenth she probably would have taken second honors This daughter of Fairy King and Gyrene was not expected by her stable connections to figure conspicuously at the finish as she races best over a long distance of ground However she demonstrated by her performance yester ¬ day that she will give a good account of herself when she meets the best here in the longer races racesIt It was the gray mare Vera Rita that scrambled home first in the opener at five eighths mile and started the talent off on the right foot She took the measure of Til lotson and Norfield in one of those extra busy finishes finishesThe The best horse finished in second place in the next race a split of the first Avhen Joe Campbell failed to get up and was beaten by a nose by Candorosa Joe Campbell which had he won would have paid better than 25 to 1 was away slowly and was forced to race wide throughout When straightened away in the stretch he came with a cyclonic rush and only failed by inches at the end of annexing the purse purseSURPRISE SURPRISE AT LONG ODDS ODDSCharley Charley Boy came to life in the fourth and startled the public when he carried the colors of A L Briggs to an easy victory from Summer Sigh and Col Snider The winner finished out the mile journey with a length to spare and paid the lucrative returns of 6260 for each 2 invested Summer Sigh which was closest to him at the finish al ¬ most Avent down while racing to the first turn He stepped on the heels of one of the other horses and jockey Stevens was forced to take him up sharply When he did settle down into his full stride he made up much ground but the early effort told and when Charley Boy challenged in the stretch he fell an easy victim to his welltimed rush rushThe The horse Yermak winner of the third race changed hands via the claiming route when G Hum took him for 900 This is the second horse that William Red Walk ¬ er has lost in this manner during the present Continued on twelfth page LION DOR SPEED WONDER Continued from first page meeting Ring having been claimed from him by A L Briggs recently recentlyJockey Jockey hurled a defy to trainer Henry McDaniel of the J K L Ross estab ¬ lishment and offered to bet a substantial side wager that Motor Cop could take Lion dOrs measure at fiveeighths both to carry equal
