Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Jan 6 1903 Racing at Oakland New Orleans and New ¬ port portSam Sam Doggett is gradually becoming ac ¬ customed to the new role which he has under ¬ taken which is that of trainer He still keeps up his riding and is to be found daily exercising some of his horses on the Gravesend track So far he has but four all of which will carry his own colors But as time goes on and he shows his capability his number will surely increase for Doggett has always been noted as a hard worker At present his little team occupies one end of the M F Dwyer stable which is handy to Doggetts house on the other side of Brooklyn Boule ¬ vard Ernest E Featherstone who bough Kyrat holder of the worlds record at two and a half j miles in 424 for exportation to Austria several seasons ago has just received a letter from the horses owner asking for his com ¬ plete American performances they desiring this information with a view to retiring him to the stud this year Kyrat has held his own with the best horses in that country and is assured of receiving a liberal stud patronage j He is a son of Teuton Anna by Longfellow and was bred by trainer James Murphy whose sudden death was chronicled a few weeks ago Kyrats dam is now in France the property of W K Vanderbilt VanderbiltDavid David Gideon has an imported colt at Holm J a threeyearold that is arousing con ¬ siderable attention in racing circles The youngster Stanhope is by Florirel II King Edwards great race horse from the American bred mare Kings Daughter by Kingfisher Stanhope was such a promising yearling that he was entered extensively in many English stakes but developed into such a big colt that he was never trained and has yet to face the barrier Enoch Wishard tried Stanhope half a mile in 47 seconds when he had charge of the youngster and the rest of the Croker string He will be trained this season if possible possibleBishop Bishop Poole trainer for M H Tichenor Co had intended to ship Flo Carline Waswift Elsie L Harry and perhaps one other of the string which tbe Chicago firm has had at New Orleans sinro the beginning of the meeting to Memphis Friday but did not secure a car Trainer Poole has wired Mr Tichenor to send one of his own cars down from Chicago and on its arrival the horsss named will be taken to Montgomery Park to be Crescent City Derby and with the good colt Sidney C Love she will be given special prepa ¬ ration over the Memphis track for the big Memphis events i iContrary Contrary to a report that was circulated toward the close of last season Colonel James E Pepper will not retire from the turf but will be represented by a highclass string which will be trained by Crit Davis who handled the Pepper string last year Since returning to Kentucky Colonel Pepper has greatly improved in health so that he be ¬ lieves with the material in hand it will be of advantage to try one more year to win a fair share of the rich turf prizes Colonel Pepper has not yet engaged a jockey to fill Redfcrns place but ha has several promising boys in view The Pepper stable will be com ¬ posed of threeyearolds Love Note Fleeing Venus and Mint Leaf and about ten or twelve j twoyearolds
